आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

तीक्ष्णधारेण  खड्गेन  वरं जिह्वा  द्विधा  कृता  |
नतु  मानं  परित्यज्य  देहिदेहीति  भाषितम्       ||
                 -सुभाषित रत्नाकर ( प्रसंगरत्नावली )

भावार्थ -   एक याचक दारा याचना करने से अच्छा तो यही
होगा कि वह किसी तेज धार वाली छुरी से अपनी जीभ के दो
टुकडे कर दे , अन्यथा उसे अपना  आत्म-सम्मान त्याग कर
बार बार यही कहना होगा कि 'कृपया मुझे अमुक वस्तु प्रदान
करें '|

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित भी 'याचकनिन्दा' शीर्षक के अन्तर्गत संकलित
है | एक याचक को कितना अपमान सहन करना पडता है उसका
परोक्ष रूप में चित्रण इस सुभाषित में किया गया है | )

Teekshnadhaarena  khadgena varam jihvaa dvidhaa krutaa.
Natu  maanam  parityajya dehideheeti bhaashitam.

Teekshna = very sharp.   Dhaarena = edge of.   Khadgna=
of a sword or big knife,    Varam = preferably.    Jihavaa=
the tongue.   Dvidhaa = two pieces.   Krutaa = done.   Na =
not.       Tu = but, and.        Maanam = pride, self-respect.
Parityajya = by sacrificing.   Dehideheeti = dehi + dehi +
iti.    Dehi = give .   Iti = thus, so.    Bhaashitaam = should
address as.

i.e.    For a beggar it is preferable to cut his tongue  into two
pieces with a sharp knife rather than losing his self-respect
by uttering again and again - 'please give this to me' .

(This Subhashit is also classified under the caption 'Yaachak
ninda' i.e. condemning the begging.  It indirectly deals with
the ignominy a beggar has to face while begging.)
