आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

पुरतः  प्रेरयेत्याशा  लज्जापृष्ठाSवलम्बिनी  |
ततो लज्जाSSशयोर्मध्ये  दोलायत्यार्थिनां मनः  |
                        - सुभाषित रत्नाकर (सभातरंग )

भावार्थ -       एक याचक सर्वप्रथम कुछ प्राप्ति की  आशा से
प्रेरित हो कर ही याचना करता है और फिर लज्जित भी होता
है |  इसके बाद इच्छापूर्ति होने या न होने तक उसका मन आशा
और निराशा  के मध्य डोलता रहता है |

(इस सुभाषित में एक याचक की लज्जा की भावना तथा  आशा
और निराशा के बीच डोलती हुई उसकी मनोदशा का सुन्दर वर्णन
किया गया है |  )

Puratah  prerayetyaashaa  lajjaprushthaavalambinee,
Tato lajjaashayormadhye dolaayatyarthinaam manah,

Purrutah = in front, initially.           Prerayati + aashaa.
Prerayati = stimulates, incites.    Aashaa = hope.
Lajjaa = embarrassment,    Prushtha + avalambinee.
Prushtha = followed by.   Avalambinee = dependent upon.
Tato = afterwards.   Lajjaa + aashayoh + madhye.
Aashayoh + hope.    Madhye - between, in the middle.
Dolaayati + arthinaam.    Dolaayati = swings to and fro.
Arthinaam = beggars.    Manah = mind.

i.e.     Initially a beggar  is  motivated to beg with the hope
of getting something, followed by the feeling of embarrass-
ment for doing so. Thereafter, his  mind swings between hope
and embarrassment until such time his request is granted
or rejected .
