अधमा धनमिच्छन्ति धनमानौ च मध्यमा |
उत्तमा मानमिच्छन्ति मानो हि महतां धनम् ||

भावार्थ - निम्नतम श्रेणी के व्यक्ति केवल धन की ही कामना
करते हैं तथा मध्यम श्रेणी के व्यक्ति धन और सम्मान दोनों
की कामना करते हैं | परन्तु उत्तम श्रेणी के व्यक्ति केवल सम्मान
प्राप्ति की ही इच्छा करते हैं, क्यों कि समाज में सम्मान प्राप्त होना
ही महान व्यक्तियों के लिये धन के समान है |
Adhamaa dhanamicchanti dhanamaanau cha madhyama.
Uttamaa maanamicchanti maano hi mahataam dhanam.
Adhamaa = persons of lowest category. Dhanam + icchanti.
dhanam = wealth. Icchanti = desire. Dhana = wealth.
Maanau = respect. Cha = and. Madhyamaa = of the middle
category. Uttamaa = of the highest category. Maanam +
icchanti. Maanam = respect. Hi =surely. Mahataaam=
great people.
i.e. Persons of lowest category desire only acquisition of wealth.
whereas those of middle category desire both wealth and respect
in the society. However, persons of the highest category desire
only due respect, because for great people respectability in the
society is like wealth for them.
