definitely flowers (and ultimately produces fruits).

(The above subhashita deals with the subject heredity i.e.
tendency of  all sorts of organisms (including humans) to transmit
its nature to its descendants, by using the metaphor of a ketak
tree, which can not produce fruits like gooseberry tree.)

result in gradual erosion of their fame so assiduously earned by them
through religious austerity, just as imprudent and bad conduct destroys
the fame of a person.

Today's Subhashita.

is being in the service of a wicked person, but the most difficult situation
is being penniless.

Today's Subhashita.naasau

Bhavitavyam yatha yena naasau bhavati chaanyathaa.
Neeyate tena maargena svayam vaa tatra gacchati.

Bhavitavyam = an action that is destined to happen
Yatha = whatever    Yena = where.   Naasau = na

Chaanyathaa = otherwise.    Neeyate = comes down to\
Tena = that.   Maargena = road.     Svyam = himself.
vaa = you          Tatra = there.   Gacchati = goes.

i.e.    Whatever is destined for  a person is bound to happen and
nothing else can happen.  Destiny does not come to that person but
forces the person concerned to take that route where he can meet
his destiny.

(This shloka has also been adopted by Goswami Tulsidas, the author of 'Ramcharit Manas' in his treatise in this way :- तुलसी  जसि भवितव्यता तैसी मिलइ सहाय | आपुनु आवइ ताहि पहिं ताहि तहां लेइ जाइ | i.e. A person gets counsel or help which is destined for him. Destiny does not come to a person, but the person is forced by circumstance to go (act in such a way) and meet his destiny. This has been said in the episode of the King Pratapbhanu and his meeting with his enemy, now living in exile in the garb of a sage.)

Today's Subhashita/

Alpam kinchicchriyam praapya neecho garvaayate laghuh.
Padmapatra tale bheko manyate dandadhaarinam,

Alpam = a little.        Kinchicchiriyam = kinchit + shriyam.

Padmapatra = a leaf of a lotus plant.    Tale =  base, bottom.
Bheko -= a frog.        Manyate = imagines   thinks.
Dandadhaarinam = a mendicant or high level administrator
like a judge, who were accompanied by attendants holding a
ceremonial mace,or umbrella as a symbol of their higher status

i.e.      If an ordinary person with mean mentality becomes  even a
little bit prosperous, he  becomes very proud and arrogant and
considers himself a very prominent person, just like  a small frog
lying below a lotus leaf  considering himself as  a revered mendicant
or a high Government official.

( In the present context the simile used in this Subhashita appears
to be very appropriate having regard to the yearning among the
politicians for 'red beckoned cars' and 'Commando security' as
their status symbol.)
