काकचेष्टा बकोध्यानं श्वाननिद्रा तथैव च |
अल्पाहारी गृहत्यागी विद्यार्थी पञ्च लक्षणम् ||
अर्थ - एक कव्वे के समान चौकन्ना रहना , शिक्षा ग्रहण करते समय एकाग्रता और ध्यान एक बगुले के समान (जो मछली पकडते समय एकाग्र और ध्यानमग्न रहता है) , नींद में एक कुत्ते के समान (जो जरा सी आहट होते ही जाग जाता है ), अल्पाहारी तथा अपने घर परिवार से दूर रहने वाला, ये पांचों लक्षण एक विद्यार्थी में विद्यमान होते हैं |
Kaakacheshthaa bakodhyaanam shvaana nidraa tathaiva cha.
Alpaaharee gruhatyaagee vidyaarthee pancha lakshanam.
Kaak = a crow. Cheshtaa = behavious, manner of living. Kaakcheshtaa = alertness like a crow.
Bako = a crane. Dhyaanam= meditation. Bakidhyaanam = concentration over his task like that of a crane while catching fish in water. Shvaan = a dog. Nidraa = sleep. Shvaannidraa = sleep like that of a dog, who wakes up at the slightest interference. Tathaiva = similarly. Cha = and. Alpaahari = one who takes little food, a frugal eater. Gruhatyaagee = away from home. Vidyaarthee = a student, seeker of knowledge. Panch = five. Lakshanam = characteristics, symptoms.
i.e. Alertness like a crow, concentration over the task in hand like that of a crane while catching fish, taking a nap like that of a dog, which wakes up at the slightest provocation , a frugal eater and remaining mostly away from home, these are the five characteristics of a student.
