अहो धनमदान्धस्तु पश्यन्नपि न पश्यति |
यदि पश्यत्यात्महितं स पश्यति न संशयः ||
अर्थ - अहो ! एक धनमदान्ध व्यक्ति अपने चारों ओर घटित घटनाओं को देखा कर भी उनकी अनदेखी कर देता है | परन्तु यदि वे घटनायें उसके हितसाधन की होती हैं तो इस में कोई संशय नहीं कि वह् उन्हें अवश्य देखता है |
(इस सुभाषित में उन अत्यन्त धनी व्यक्तियों के उपर व्यङ्ग्य किया गया है जो अपने धनमद में समाज में व्याप्त गरीबी, अशिक्षा , कुरीतियों आदि के प्रति जानबूझ कर अनजान बने रहते हैं और अपने धन का सदुपयोग उन कुरीतियों और समस्याओं को दूर करने में नहीं करते है , परन्तु अपने हितसाधन में सदैव चौकन्ने और तत्पर रहते हैं |)
Aho = Oh ! Dhana = wealth. Madhaandastu = blinded by drunkenness or passion.
Pashyannapi = pashyan + api. Pashyan = seeing. Api = even. Na = not Pashyati = sees.
Yadi = if . Pashyatyaatmahitam = Pashyati +aatmahitam. Aatmahitam = in one's self interest.
sa = he . Sansahayah = doubt.
i.e. Oh ! A person blinded by his passion for wealth, even on observing various incidents around him ignores them and behaves as if he has not seen them . But if the incidents are crucial in his self-interest, he undoubtedly takes keen interest in such incidents.
(In this Subhashita the author has indirectly condemned the tendency among the supper rich to remain purposely oblivious of the miseries of the society around them and do not provide any monetary help for eradicating them. But when incidents crucial to their self-interest occur they take keen interest in them.)
