Today's Subhashita.

उपकारपरः प्रवरः प्रत्युपकारं करोति मध्यस्थः |
नीचस्तदपि न कुरुते उपकार्वशाद्भवति शत्रुः  सः ||

अर्थ -       जो व्यक्ति दूसरों के प्रति स्वतः उपकार करते हैं वे सर्वोत्तम श्रेणी के  होते हैं  और जो व्यक्ति उपकृत होने पर प्रत्युपकार करते हैं (या कृतज्ञता व्यक्त  करते हैं) वे मध्यम  श्रेणी के होते हैं |   परन्तु जो  व्यक्ति  प्रत्युपकार करना तो दूर उलटे  शत्रुवत्  व्यवहार करने लगते हैं  वे निम्नतम श्रेणी के होते हैं  |

Upakaaraparah pravarah pratyupakaaram karoti madhyasthh.
Neechastadapi na kurute upakaarvashaadvhavati shatruh sah.

Upakaar = helping others.     Parah = others.     Pravarah =  best.     Pratyupakaara = returning a favour.
Karoti = does.      Madhyasthah = of the middle category or position.    Neechastadapi = neechah +tadapi.
Neecha = mean, low category.     Tadapi = even then.   Na = not      Kurute = does
Upakaaravashaadbhavati =   upakaar +vashaat +bhavati.    Vashaat = on account of.     Bhavati = becomes.
Shatruh = enemy.     Sah = that person.

i.e.        Those persons who voluntarily help others are of  the best category, whereas those persons,  who
return the favours given to them (or express gratitude) ,are of the middle category. However, those who do not return the favour or express gratitude and on the other hand behave like an enemy, are of the lowest
category.
