आदौ कुलं परीक्षेत ततो विद्यां ततो वयः |
शीलं धनं ततो रूपं देशं पश्चात्विवाहयेत् ||
अर्थ - विवाह सम्बन्ध तय करने के समय सर्व प्रथम दूसरे पक्ष के पात्र की पारिवारिक पृष्टभूमि (कुल) की अच्छी तरह् जांच कर लेनी चाहिये और तत्पश्चात् क्रमशः शैक्षणिक योग्यता, आयु, चरित्र , धन संपत्ति , रूप और अन्त में नागरिकता की जांच करने के पश्चात् संतुष्ट होने के बाद ही विवाह संपन्न करना चाहिये |
Aadau kulam pareekshet tato vidyaam tato vayah.
Sheelam dhanam tato roopam pashchaatvivaahayet.
Aadau = at the beginning. Kulam = lineage of the family. Pareekshet = enquire about, find out.
Tato = thereafter. Vidyaam = educational status. Vayah = age. Sheelam = character.
Dhanam = wealth. Roopam = appearance and beauty. Desham = country, nationality.
pashchaatvivaahayet = pashchaat + vivaahayet. Pashchaat = later, afterwards. Vivaahayet = get married.
i.e. While negotiating a marriage proposal , first of all the family lineage of the other party should be thoroughly investigated and thereafter the educational qualification, age, character, financial status, personal appearance and beauty and the citizenship of the candidate should be properly assessed. The marriage should then be solemnised only after a satisfactory report on the aforesaid points.
