आदौ तातो वरं पश्येत्ततो वित्तं ततः कुलं |
यदि कश्चिद्वरे दोषः किं धनेन कुलेन किं ||
अर्थ - विवाह सम्बन्ध तय करते समय सर्वप्रथम वर और उसके पिता के स्वभाव और चरित्र की जांच परख कर लेनी चाहिये और तत्पश्चात उन की संपत्ति तथा कुल की जांच करनी चाहिये | यदि विवाह होने के पश्चात् वर में कोई दोष ज्ञात होता है है तो उसका धनी और कुलीन होने से क्या लाभ ?
Aadau taato varam pashyettato vittam tatah kulam.
yadi kashchidvare doshah kim dhanena kulena kim.
Aadau = at the beginning. Taato = father. Varam = bride groom. Pashyettato = pashyet + tato'
Pashyet = observe, assess. tato = thereafter. Vittam = wealth. Tatah = and thereafter.
Kulam = lineage of the family. Yadi = if. Kashchidvare = kashhcit = vare. Kashchit = if due to some reason.. Vare = in the bride groom. Doshah = defect, shortcoming. Kim = what ? Dhanena = with wealth. Kulena = with the family lineage.
i.e. While negotiating a marriage proposal ,initially one should make discreet enquiries about the nature and character of the bridegroom and his father and thereafter about their financial status and family background. After solemnising the marriage if some serious shortcoming is found in the bridegroom, then of what use is his wealth and family lineage ?
