अनभ्यासेन विद्यायां असंसर्गेण धीमतां |
अनिग्रहेण चाक्षाणां जायते व्यसनं नृणां ||
अर्थ - व्यक्तियों के द्वारा नियमित अभ्यास न करने से विभिन्न विद्याओं के उपयोग् करने की क्षमता में ह्रास , विद्वज्जनो से निरन्तर संपर्क न रखने से विवेकहीनता , अधैर्य तथा अनुशासित न होने से जुआ खेलने पर हानि, ये सभी दुष्परिणाम भुगतने पडते हैं |
(एक अन्य सुभाषित मे भी कहा गया है कि - 'अनभ्यासे विषं शास्त्रं' - अर्थात निरन्तर अभ्यास न करने से शास्त्र विष के समान हो जाता है |)
Anabhyaase = for want of practice or skill. Vidyaayaam = different fields knowledge.
Asansargena = not maintaining contact, disassociation with. Dheemataam = intelligence, wisdom.
Anigrahena = being unrestrained. Chaakshanam = cha +akshanam. Cha = and. Akshanam =
the game of dice. Jaayate =becomes, happens. Vyasanam = bad habits, misfortune , evil results. Nrunaam = people..
i.e. Absence of regular practice and recapitulation results in loss of command over various disciplines of learning , not being in the company of noble persons results in loss of wisdom, unrestrained behaviour and impatience results in losing a game of dice by the people.
(There is another subhashita on this theme which says -"anabhyase visham shaastram' i.e. if not regularly practised the 'Shastra' (a discipline of learning say Music, Medicine etc.) become like a poison.)
