अत्यम्बुपानाद्भवन्ति रोगाः अल्पाम्बुपाने च तथैव दोषाः |
तस्मान्नरो वह्निविवर्धनाय मुहुर्मुहुर्वारि पिवेद्भूरि ||
अर्थ - अत्यधिक जल पीने से अनेक रोग हो जाते हैं तथा कम जल पीने से भी उसी प्रकार के दोष (रोग) उत्पन्न हो जाते हैं | अतएव लोगों को अपनी जठराग्नि (पाचन शक्ति ) में वृद्धि करने के लिये बारम्बार थोडे थोडे अन्तराल में आवश्यकता के अनुसार जल पीना चाहिये |
(आयुर्वेद में निर्देश है कि भोजन करने से ठीक पहले अधिक जल पीने से पेट के अन्दर भोजन को पचाने वाले अम्ल कं प्रभावी हो जाते हैं अतः भोजन करने के कुछ समय के बाद ही जल पीना चाहिये | आवश्यकता से अधिक जल पीना हानिकारक है और कम जल पीना भी उसी तरह हानिकारक है क्यों कि उससे शरीर में जल तत्व की कमी हो जाती है | शरीर की आवश्यकतानुसार जल को एक साथ न पी कर उसे थोडे थोडे अन्तराल से ही पीना चाहिये , यही इस सुभाषित में व्यक्त किया गया है | )

Tasmaannaro vahnivivardhanaaya muhurmuhurvaari pivedbhoori.
Atyambupaanaatprabhavanti = Ati +ambu+paanaat + prabhavanti. Ati = too much.
Ambu = water. Paanaat = by drinking. Prabhavanti =, happen. Rogaah = diseases. Alpaambu = Alpa +ambu. Alpa = little, small. Paane = on drinking. Cha = amd/
Tatheva = similar. Doshaah = disorders/ Tasmaannaro = Tasmaat + naro.
Tasmat = hence, on that account. Naro = people. Vahnivivardhanaaya = Vahni +
Vivardhanaaya. Vahni = fire (reference to digestive process in the stomach )
Vivardhanaaya = for increasing, augmenting. Muhurmuhurvaari = Muhuh +muhuh+
vaari. Muhuh muhuh = again and again. Vaari = water. Pivedbhoori = pivet +bhoori.
Pivet = should drink. Bhoori = frequently, considerately
i.e. Drinking too much water causes many types of diseases and drinking less water also results in similar diseases. Hence, in order to increase their digestive process people should drink small quantity of water repeatedly from time to time .
(In Ayurveda it is ordained that one should not drink too much water just before taking a meal, as it results in dilution of digestive juices secreted in the stomach and affects proper digestion. It is also advised to spread over the total requirement of water for the human body and drink small quantity of water again and again after some interval of time. The above Subhashita deals with this subject.The digestive process is alluded to a fire burning in the stomach and is called 'Jatharaagni', which helps in digesting the food.)
