Adooragamanam teertham adehagamanam tapah.
Anambhah sambahvam snaanam maatushcharana pankajam.
Adoor = not distant, near. Gamanam = going, visiting. Teertham = a place of pilgrimage. Adeha = bodiless. Tapah = religious austerity, generally done by denying various comforts to the human body. Anambuh = waterless. Sambhavam = possibility. Snaanam = bath.
Maatushcharana = Maatuh +charana. Maatuh = mother. Charana = feet. Pankajam = lotus.
i.e. It may be possible to achieve 'Punya' by not doing pilgrimage of a far off religious centre, without tormenting one's body for doing 'Tapa', and taking a bath without water , if he worships the lotus like feet of his mother (serves his mother with devotion).
(The above Subhashita indirectly exhorts people to serve their mothers with devotion and diligence, which will give them 'punya' more than the 'punya' earned by doing pilgrimages of far off religious places, doing 'Tapa' , and daily religious chores like bathing and prayer etc. 'Punya' is a concept of Hindu Religion , which implies that by following a righteous and religious lifestyle, a person earns certain plus points, which place him in a very comfortable position and status in his next life cycle or even during his lifetime as well. )
