आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

लक्ष्मि  क्षमस्व  वचनीयमिदं  दुरुक्तमन्धीभवति पुरुषास्त्वदुपासनेन |
नोचेत्कथं  कमलपत्रविशालनेत्रो  नारायणः स्वपिति पन्नगभोगतल्पे  ||

भावार्थ -       ओ कमलपत्र के समान विशाल नेत्रों वाली माता लक्ष्मी  !
मुझे  आपके प्रति  इन कटु वचन कहने  के लिये क्षमा करें  कि  जो भी
व्यक्ति आपकी उपासना करते हैं वे अन्धे (मदान्ध )हो जाते है |  यदि
ऐसा सही नहीं है तो क्यों आपके पति भगवान नारायण शेषनाग की
कुण्डली को एक  पलंग की तरह प्रयुक्त कर उसके ऊपर शयन करते हैं ?

(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित 'लक्ष्मीस्वभाव ' शीर्षक के अन्तर्गत संकलित है |
प्रायः  यह देखा गया है कि अत्यन्त धनवान व्यक्तियों का व्यवहार
अन्य व्यक्तियों के प्रति  असंयत और रूखा हो जाता है अर्थात वे
धन  के मद में एक अन्धे व्यक्ति के समान व्यवहार करने लगते हैं  |
इसी तथ्य को एक हास्य रस प्रधान उपमा ( श्री नारायण का शेषशय्या
पर शयन करना ) के द्वारा व्यक्त किया गया है |  जब श्री नारायण ही
स्वयं लक्ष्मी के पति होने के कारण ऐसा व्यवहार करते है तो फिर
साधारण मनुष्यों का क्या कहना ? )

Lakshmi kshamasva vachaneeeyam-idam duruktm-andheebhavati
purushaastvadupaasanena.
Nochet-katham kamalapatra-vishaalnetro Naarayanah svapiti pannaga-
bhogatalpe.

Lakshmi = the Goddess of Riches.   Kshamasva = forgive me.
Vachaneeyam + idam.   Vachaneeyam = blame, criticism.     Idam =
this.    Duruktam = harsshly addressed.    Andhee = blind.   Bhavnti =
become.   Purushaah = people.  Tvad = your.   Upaasanenena =  by
worshipping .   No = not.  Chet = if.   Katham = how ? In what manner ?
Kamalapatra = leaf of a lotus flower.  Vishaal = large.   Netro = eyes.
Naraayanah = God Vishnu, the consort of Lakshmi.   Svapiti = sleeps.
Pannaga = a snake. (here a reference to 'Shesh Naag'  in Indian mytho-
logy )     Bhog = coiled body.   Talpe = a  cot,  couch.

i.e.    O Goddess Lakshmi having large eyes like lotus petals !  Please
forgive me for uttering these harsh words about you.  Every body who
worships you and becomes rich behaves like a blind person . Otherwise,
how is it that  even your husband  God Narayana sleeps over the coil
of the serpent  Shesh Naag  using it as his bed  ?

(This Subhashita is classified under the head "Lakshmi Svabhaava' .
It is common knowledge that  by becoming very rich people behave
like blind persons. This fact has been highlighted by using a simile
of Lord Vishnu, the consort of  Goddess Lakshmi, using the coil of
the serpent Shesh Naag as his bed.  When even God behaves like this
then the fate of ordinary mortals is easy to imagine.)
