Today's Subhashita.

कार्यं च किं ते परदोषदृष्टया  |  कार्यं च किं  ते परचिन्तया च  ||
मृषा कथं खिद्यति बालबुद्धे   |  कुरु स्वकार्यं त्यज सर्वमन्यान्  ||

अर्थ  -      वह कार्य कैसे सम्पन्न होगा  जिस पर  बाहरी व्यक्तियों द्वारा दोषारोपण  तथा चिन्ता व्यक्त करने  का अत्यधिक संज्ञान लोगे ?   ओ बालसुलभ बुद्धि के स्वामी ! इस प्रकार की आलोचनाओं  से  तुम व्यर्थ ही चिन्तित हो रहे हो |  इन सब  आलोचनाओं और चिन्ताओं को छोड कर  अपना कार्य संपन्न कर  |


Kaaryam cha kim te paradoshadrushtayaa.     Kaaryam cha kim te parachintayaa cha,
Mrushaa katham khidyati baalabuddhe              kuru svakaaryam taja sarvamanyaan

Kaary = deed, function, at.    Kim = what.    te = they.    Paradosha  = proclaiming of another's faults.
Drushtayaa =seeing.      Parachintayaa = thinking of or caring for others.   Mrushaa = nonsensically.
in vain.     Katham = talk, saying/       Khidyati= feels distressed or wearied.    Baalbuddhe = childish
perception.      svakaaryam = one's own work.        Tyaja = forgo,do without.
sarvamanyaan = sarvam +anyaan.   Sarvam = all.    Anyaan- = others.

i.e.       How can a task  be accomplished if you take unnecessary notice of  criticism and concern
shown by the outsiders?  Listen, O person of childish perception, all this criticism and advice is nonsensical and you are unnecessarily feeling distressed  and wearied.  So,just do without all the advice of others and accomplish the task in hand.

Today's Subhashita.

कार्पण्येन यशः क्रुधा  गुणचयो दम्भेन सत्यं क्षुधा
मर्यादा व्यसनैर्धनं  च विपदा स्थैर्यं प्रमादे द्विजः    |
पैशुन्येन  कुलं  मदेन  विनयो  दुश्चेष्ठया   पौरुषं
दारिद्र्येण  जनादरो  ममतया  चात्मप्रकाशो  हतः   ||

अर्थ -      कृपणता  (कंजूसी)  से  यश का ,   क्रोध से विभिन्न गुणों  का ,  दम्भ से सत्य का  , क्षुधित होने पर मर्यादा का ,  व्यसनी होने से धन संपत्ति का  , विपदा आने पर धैर्य और स्थिरताका ,  लापरवाही तथा मद्यपान से  द्विज के सम्मान का ,  द्वेष् पूर्ण व्यवहार से परिवार का ,  घमन्ड या मद्यपान से विनयशीलता का , दुर्व्यवहार से पौरुष का,  दरिद्रता के कारण समाज मे सम्मान का, और अत्यधिक ममत्व  के कारण  आत्मप्रकाश का नाश हो जाता है

Kaarpanyen yashh krudhaa gunachayo dambhen satym skhudhaa.
maeyaadaa vyasanerdhanam cha vipadaa sthsairym pramaade dvijah.
paishunyam kualm maden vinayo sushtcheshthayaa paurusham.
Daaridryam janaadaro mamatayaa chaatmaprakasho hatah.

Karpanyen = parsimony, miserly behaviour.     Yashh = fame.     Krudhaa = rage, anger.
Gunachayo = various talents and virtues.      Dambhena =  due to hypocracy.      Satym = truth.  
Kshudhaa = hunger.     Maryaada =  propriety of conduct.    Vyasanairdhanam = vyasanaih + dhanam.
Vyasanaih = addictions.    Dhanam = wealth.     cha = and.    Vipadaa = misfortune, calamity.
Shairya = steadiness, permanence.     Pramade = by intoxication/ negligence.    Dvija = twice born.
(In Hindu religion Socoety is divided into four category i.e.brahmin,kshatriya, vaishya and shoodra. The first three categories are known as Dvija (twice born) after performance of a ritual called Yagyopavit saamskaar, whichbis denied to Shoodras.)      Paishunena = by wickedness, malice.     Kulam = family.   Madena= due to pride or intoxication.  Vinaya = humility, modesty.      Dushchesthayaa = misconduct.      Paurusham = manliness.    Daaridryena = by poverty.     Janaadaro = jana + aadaro.     Jana = public .   Aadaro =respect
Mamatayaa = feeling of attachment towards kith and kin.           Aatmaprakash = self -illumination.,
self realisation.     Hatah =  lost, destroyed.

i.e.     Through miserly behaviour  fame is lost, and so also various talents and virtues by angry behaviour, truth due to hypocrisy,  propriety of conduct by a very hungry person,   wealth is lost  due to various addictions,  steadiness is lost while facing misfortune,  respect of a Brahmin is lost on being intoxicated or being negligent, family life by malicious behaviour,  humility and modesty due to being proud or under influence of liquor,  respect in the society on being very poor, and self- enlightenment is lost if one is too much attached towards his kith and kin.

Today's Subhashita.

कार्पण्यवृत्तिः स्वजनेषु निन्दा कुचेलता नीचजनेषु भक्तिः |
अतीव  रोषः  कटुका  च वाणी नरस्य चिह्नं  नरकागतस्य  ||

अर्थ -       गरीबी को जीवन यापन का साधन बनाने वाला अर्थात भिखारी ,  अपने मित्रों और संभन्धियों की निन्दा करने  वाला, गन्दे और फटे वस्त्र पहनने वाला , नीच व्यक्तियों का भक्त , अत्यन्त क्रोधी स्वभाव वाला   तथा कटु वचन बोलने वाला ,  जिन व्यक्तियों मे ये लक्षण  पाये जाते हैं , वे  सभी व्यक्ति जीते जी नारकीय जीवन व्यतीत करते  हैं |

Kaarpanya vruttih svajaneshu nindaa kuchelataa neechajaneshu bhaktih .
ateeva roshh katukaa cha vaane narasya chihnam narakaagatasdya.

Kaarpanya = poverty.    Vruttih = profession, job.     Karpanyavruttih = using poverty as a profession i.e.begging.     Svajaneshu =  towards relatives.      Ninda = abuse, defamation.     Kuchelata = shabbily dressed,        Neechajaneshu = lowly and wicked persons'        Bhaktih = devotion, faithfullness.
Ateeva = extremely, very.     Roshah =  anger. rage.     Katukaa = bad, bitter.   Vaani = language, words.
Narasya = a person's     Chihnam =  sign, symbol, trait.      Narakaagatasya = narak +aagatasya.
Narak = the Hell.      Aagatasya = a person who has arrived .

i..e.           Persons who are  beggars,   abuse and defaming their close relatives,  wear dirty and tattered clothes,  are devoted and faithful towards lowly and wicked persons,  full of anger and  speak foul  and harsh language, all those persons who display these symptoms  live a life as if they are living  in the Hell.

कार्पण्यं   दर्पमाने  च  भयमुद्वेग  एव     च |
अर्थजानि विदुः प्राज्ञा दुःखान्येतानि देहिनां ||

अर्थ -     बुद्धिमान् तथा विद्वान् व्यक्तियों का कथन है कि  समस्त जीवधारियों के दुःखों का प्रमुख कारण  गरीबी, घमण्ड, भय तथा उद्वेग (अकारण  तनाव  में तथा चिन्तित रहना) , ये सभी परिस्थितियां  हैं |

Kaarpanyam darpamaane cha bhayamudvega eva cha.
Arthjaani viduh praagyaa duhkhaanyetaani dehinaam.

Kaarpanya = poverty.     Darpamaan = pride.     cha = and .     Bhayamudvega = bhaya +udvega.
Bhaya = fear.     Udvega = distress, anxiety.     Eva =  really.    Arthjaani = reasons, meanings.
Viduh = wise men.     Praagyaa = learned men.    Duhkhaaanyetaani = duhkhaan + etaan.
Duhkhaani = grief,suffering, sorrows.    Etaani = these.    Dehinaam = living beings.,

i.e.       According to wise and learned persons , poverty, pride, fear, distress and anxiety, all these are the reasons for all types of  grief and sufferings of all humans and living beings beings

Today's Subhashita.

कारुण्येनात्मनो  मानं  तृष्णां  च  परितोषतः |
उत्थानेन जयेत्तन्द्रीं वितर्कं निश्चयाज्जयेत ||

अर्थ =   दूसरों के प्रति करुणा  भाव रखने से आत्मसम्मान प्राप्त होता है और संतोषी होने से तृष्णा  पर विजय प्राप्त होती है |   पुरुषार्थ  द्वारा  आलस्य तथा वितर्क (आधार हीन  आशंकाओं ) पर निश्चय ही विजय प्राप्त  करो |
Kaarunyenaatmano maanam trushnaam cha paritishatah.
Utthaanena  jayettandreem vitarkam nishchayaajjayet.

Kaarunyenaatmano =  Kaarunyaena +aatmano.     Kaarunyena =  Through kindness or compassion.
Aatmano = self.     Maan = respect.      Trushnaa = greed, thirst.     Paritoshatah = by satisfaction.
Utthaanena = by manly exertion.    Jayettandreem = jayet +tandreem.     Jayet = conquer, win.
Tandreem = laziness, lassitude.       Vitarkam = doubts, dubious reasonings.    Nishchayayaajjayet =
nishchayaat +jayet.     Nishchayaat = certainly.

i.e.       Self-respect is achieved by showing kindness or compassion to others.  Greed is overcome by
being satisfied at one's fortune in life.  One should  certainly conquer laziness, dubious reasoning and indecisiveness by manly exertion and entrepreneurship.

Today's Subhashita.

कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभो देहे तिष्ठन्ति तस्कराः |
ते  मुष्णान्ति  जगत्सर्वं  तस्माज्जाग्रत  जाग्रत ||

अर्थ -      काम ,  क्रोध और लोभ, ये तीन  प्रवृत्तियां मनुष्य के शरीर मे सदैव एक चोर की तरह् निवास करती हैं और इस संसार मे सभी को अपने प्रभाव मे ले कर विवेक शून्य (अंधा ) बना कर लूट  लेती हैं |  अतः इस मोह निद्रा से जागो |

Kaama krodhastathaa lobho dehe tioshthanti taskaraah.
te mushnaanti jagatsarvam tasmaajjagrat jaagrat .

Kaama =   erotic love, sexual urge.    Krodhastathaa = krodhh +tathaa.     Krodha = anger.
Tathaa = and.     Lobho = greed.       Dehe = human body.     Tishthanti = exist, stay.
Taskaraah = thieves.      Tey = they.    Mushnaanti = clouds , destroy.rob     Jagatsarvam = jagat +sarvam.
Jagat = this world.     Sarvam = all.      Tasmaajjagrat = tasmat + jaagrat      Tasmat = therefore, hence.
Jaagrat = wake up.

i.e.      Unbridled sexual urge, anger and greed stay like thieves in the body and mind  of all human beings in this world  and destroy their power of discriminating between  right and wrong.. Therefore,  beware and wake up, wake up from this stupor.

Today's Subhashita.

कारणान्मित्रतां एति कारणाद्याति  शत्रुता |
तस्मान्मित्रत्वं  एवात्र योज्यं वैरं न धीमता ||

अर्थ -             किसी कारण वश ही व्यक्तियों में आपस में  मित्रता होती है और किसी अन्य कारण से शत्रुता    हो जाती  है | अतएव बुद्धिमानी इसी में है कि मित्रता को विशेष  प्रयत्न पूर्वक बनाये रखना चाहिये और शत्रुता  नहीं करनी चाहिये |

Kaaranaanmitrataam eti kaaranaadyasati shatrutaa.
Tasmaanmitratvam evaatra yojyam vairam na dheemataa.

Kaaranmitrataam  = kaaranaat +mitrataam .    Kaaranaat = due to some reason.     Mitrataam = friendship.
Eti = arrives, becomes.     Kaaranaadyaati =   Kaaranaat +yaati.      Yaati = achieved.
Shatrutaa = enmity.     Tasmaanmitratvasm = Tasmat +mitratvam.      Tasmat = therefore    
Mitratvam= friendship.     Evaatra = eva +atra.       Eva = really.       Atra = here.    Yojyam = assiduously developed.   Vairam = enmity.     Na = not.     Dheemataa = wisdom,  prudence..

i.e.        Friendship between persons occurs due to some reasons and so also there is enmity due to some
other reasons.  Therefore,  prudence is to assiduously develop friendship and not to indulge in enmity with others.

कारणेनैव  जायन्ते  मित्राणि  रिपवस्तथा |
रिपवो येन जायन्ते कारणं तत्परित्यजेत्  ||

अर्थ -      किसी भी व्यक्ति के मित्र  तथा शत्रु किसी न किसी  कारण वश ही बनते हैं  तथा जिन कारणों  से शत्रु बनते हैं उन का परित्याग करना (उनसे बचना)  ही श्रेयस्कर है |

Kaaranaiva jaayante mitraani ripavastathaa.
Ripavo yena jaayante kaaranam tatparityajet.

Kaaranena +aiva .    Kaaran = reason, cause.     Aiva = really,  already.      Jaayante = come into existence, occur.      Mitraani =  friends.      Ripavastathaa =  Ripavah + tathaa.      Ripavah = enemies.     Tathaa = and.          Yena = by whom or by which (reason)      Tatparityajet = tat + parijtyajet.     Tat = that/
Parityajet =  give up,  abstain from

i.e        Every one develops friendship and enmity with others due to certain reasons.  It is always advisable to identify the reasons which cause enmity and give up or abstain from them.

Today's Subhashita.

का   प्रीतिः  सह  मार्जारैः का   प्रीतिरवनीपतौ |
गणिकाभिश्च  का प्रीतिः का प्रीतिर्भिक्षुकै सह ||

अर्थ -     बिल्लियों से , राजओं से, तथा वेश्याओं और भिखारियों से   प्रीति करने से क्या लाभ है ?

( इन चारों प्राणियों  का व्यवहार सदैव अस्थिर और अप्रत्याशित होता है . अतः प्रकारान्त से इस सुभाषित द्वारा यह  तथ्य प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि इनसे अधिक लगाव न करना ही श्रेयस्कर है ) 

Kaa preetih saha maarjaaraih kaa preetiravaneepatau.
Ganikaabhishcha kaa preetih kaa preetirbhikshubhkai saha.

Kaa = what.    Preetih = friendly relations.       Sah = with.     Maarjaaraih =  cats.    Preetiravaneepatau =
Preeti +avaneepatau .      Avaneepatau = kings.      Ganikaabhishch =  prostitutes..    Preetirbhikshukai =
=preeti + bhikshukai.    Bhikshukai = beggars.  
           
       Of what use is the friendly relations with cats, with  kings, and also with  prostitutes and beggars ?

(The attitude of all the above four is very unpredictable and  unstable.  Therefore, the idea behind this Subhashita is that friendship with them  is very risky and  done with caution or better be avoided.)

Today'sSubhashita.

कापुरुषः  कुक्कुरश्चैव   भोजनैकपरायणः  |
लालितः पार्श्वमायाति वारितो नैवगच्छति ||

अर्थ -     नीच और निरुद्द्योगी व्यक्ति (भिखारी) तथा  आवारा कुत्ते  दोनों मांग कर खाने में बहुत ही कुशल होते  हैं | यदि उनके प्रति थोडी भी उदारता दिखाई जाय तो वे निकट आ जाते हैं और फिर उन्हें भगाने का प्रयत्न करने पर भी  वे वापस नहीं जाते हैं.|

Kaapurushah kukkuraschaiva bhojanaikaparaayanah.
Laalitah paarshvamaayaati vaarito naivagacchati.

Kaapurushah = wretched and unmanly person e.g. a beggar.  Kukkurushchaiva = bkukkurashch +iva.
Kukkurushcha = a dog's.     iva = like a (for comparison).   Bhojanaikaparaayanah = bhojan + aik +
paraayanah.     Bhojan = food, meals.  Aik = one and the same, identical.    Parayaanah = main objective,
skilled in.     Laalitah = indulged, coaxed.    Paarshvamaayaati =  paarshvam + aayaati .Paarshvam = near.     Aayati = comes.    Vaarito = on being restrained or prevented.    Naiva  = not, no.   Gacchati = go.

i.e.      Wretched and unmanly persons (e.g. beggars) and stray dogs have the same expertise of begging for their food. On being indulged and shown some kindness,  they come very near to you and do not leave in spite of being warded off.

Today's Subhashita.

कान्तावियोग  स्वजनापमानं  ऋणस्य  शेषं  कुनृपस्य   सेवा |
दारिद्र्यभावद् विमुखं च मित्रं विनाग्निना पञ्च दहन्ति कायं ||

अर्थ -       पत्नी का वियोग, अपने रिश्तेदारों  द्वारा अपमानित किया जाना, लिये हुए ऋण को पूरी तरह न चुका पाना ,    एक क्रूर राजा (अधिकारी) का सेवक होना , दरिद्रता के कारण मित्रों का विमुख हो जाना,   इन
पांचों  परिस्थितियों  में  व्यक्ति अपने को  बिना आग में फंसे  हुए ही  जलने के समान अनुभव  करता है |

Kaantaaviyog svajanaapamaanam rinasya shesham kunrupasya sevaa.
Daaridryabhaavaadvimukham cha mitram vinaagninaa panch dahanti kaayam.

Kaanta = wife, beloved.    Viyog = separation.    Swajanaapamanam = swajan +apamaanaam.
Svajan = relatives, kinsmen.     Apamaanam = insult, disgrace.    Rinasya = a debt's.
Shesham = residue, left over.    Kunrupasya = a bad king's.     Sevaa = service.
Daaridryabhaavadvimukham = daaridrya + bhaavaat +vimukham.    Daaridrya = poverty.
Bhaavaad = because of, due to.   Vimukham = disinclined, averse.   Cha = and.   Mitram = friends.
Vinaagninaa = vinaa + agninaa.     Vinaa = without.     Agninaa = fire.     Panch = (these) five.
Dahanti = burn.     Kaaym - body.

i.e.          On being separated from his wife (beloved),  insulted by  close relatives, unable to repay the entire loan and a residue still remaining, being in the service of a cruel king, and his  close friends being averse(unhelpful)  due to his being poor,  these  five situations  make a person feel as if he is getting burnt without any fire around him.

Today's Subhashita.

काठिन्यं गिरिषु सदा मृदता सलिले ध्रुवः प्रभा सूर्ये  |
वैरमसज्जनहृदये      सज्जनहृदये    पुनः  क्षान्तिः  ||

अर्थ -     पर्वत सदैव अपनी दुर्गमता तथा उनके ऊपर चढाई करने की कठिनता  के लिये जाने जाते हैं, और जल अपनी मृदता के लिये, सूर्य अपनी शाश्वत प्रभा के लिये , असज्जन (दुष्ट) व्यक्ति दूसरों के प्रति अपने मन में छिपे वैर के लिये, तथा सज्जन व्यक्ति अपने धैर्य तथा सहनशीलता के लिये प्रसिद्ध हैं |

Kaathinyam girishu sadaa mrudataaa salile dhruvah prabhaa soorye.
Vairaagyamasajjana hrudaye sajjanhrudaye punah kshaanti.

Kaathinyam = rigidity, difficulty.      Girishu = mountains.      Sadaa = always.    Mrudutaa = softness,
mildness.     Salila = water.     Dhruvah = permanent, constant.     Prabhaa = radiance, light.
Vaairmasajjanhrudaye = vairam +asajjan +hrudaye.   Vaira = enmity.    Asajjana = a wicked person.
Hrudaye = heart, mind.     Sajjan = noble and righteous person     Punah = again .      Kshaantih = tolerance, patience.

i.e.        Mountains are always known for their rigidity and difficulty in climbing,  water for its softness ,the
Sun for its permanent radiance and brightness,  wicked persons for their enmity towards one and all, and
noble and righteous persons for their tolerance and patience.
 .

Today's Subhashita.

काचः काञ्चन संसर्गाद्धत्ते  मारकतीं द्युतिं  |
अश्मापि याति  देवत्वं  महद्भिः सुप्रतिष्ठितः ||

अर्थ -          साधारण कांच का एक टुकडा  भी स्वर्ण के संसर्ग में  (गहने में गढा जाने पर) एक मरकत मणि के समान चमक और शोभा प्राप्त कर लेता है और एक साधारण पत्थर भी (एक मूर्तिकार द्वारा एक देव मूर्ति के रूप में परिवर्तित किये जाने के बाद)  एक देवता के समान पूज्य और  सुप्रतिष्ठित हो जाता है |

(इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह है कि सुसंगति से साधारण व्यक्ति भी आदर और सम्मान के पात्र हो जाते हैं }

Kaachah kaanchan sansargaaddhatte maarakateem dyutim .
Ashmaapi yaati devatvam mahadbhih supratishthitah.

Kaanchan = glass.    Kaanchan = gold.    Sansargaaddhate = sansargaat + dhatte.
Sansargaad =in the company of, combining with.    Dhatte = acquires.    Maarakatee = like an emerald (a precious stone).     Dutim = brilliance, majesty.    Ashmaapi = ashma + api.     Ashma = a stone.
Api = even (to compare).   Yaati = acquires.     Devatvm = divinity, the status of God.
Mahadvih = greatly    Supratishthitah =  much consecrated, revered

i.e.      A piece of glass studded in a gold ornament  acquires brilliance and majesty like an emerald, and even a stone (on being chiseled and shaped as a statue of a God by a sculptor) acquires divinity and  is much
consecrated.

( Through this subhashita the author wants to emphasise that by keeping the company of noble and righteous persons, even ordinary persons get praise and recognition.)

Today's Subhashita.

काचो  मणिर्मणि: काचो येषां तेSन्ये  हि देहिनः  |
सन्ति ते सुधियो येषां काचः काचो मणिर्मणिः   ||

अर्थ -       जो व्यक्ति कांच के  टुकडे  को एक मणि समझते हैं और एक मणि को कांच का टुकडा , वे  अज्ञानी  और एक अलग ही श्रेणी के  होते हैं  |  परन्तु जिन  व्यक्तियों  में  कांच को कांच और मणि को मणि के  रूप में ही पहचानने  की क्षमता होती है, वे विवेकी और ज्ञानवान होते हैं |

Kaacho manirmanih kaacho yeshaam tenye hi dehinah.
santi te sudhiyo yeshaam kaachah kaacho manirmanih.

Kaacho = glass.    Manirmanih = Mani + manih.    Mani = Gem ( a precious  clear and  transparent mineral).
Yeshaam =  whose.    Tenye =  Tey + anye.    Tey = they.   Anye = other type (ignorant).   Hi = surely.
Dehinah = persons, living beings.       Santi = there are      Sudhiyo =knowledgeable and wise persons.

i.e.    Those persons who perceive an artificial gem made of glass as a real gem and a real  gem as a piece of ordinary glass, are ordinary and  ignorant  persons , whereas  those persons who have the expertise to differentiate between a real gem and an artificial gem made of glass, are surely  knowledgeable and wise .

Today's Subhashita.

काचे  मणिर्मणै  काचो  येषां  बुद्धिः  प्रवर्तते.|
न तेषां  संनिधौ भृत्यो नाममात्रोSपि  तिष्ठति ||

अर्थ =     जिस व्यक्ति मे साधारण  कांच  और एक मूल्यवान मणि को परखने की बुद्धि (क्षमता) होती
है, ऐसे व्यक्ति के पास कोई  नौकर नाममात्र ही रह पाता है, अर्थात् शायद ही स्थायी रूप से नौकरी कर सकता  है |

(इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह  है कि जो व्यक्ति गुणवान होते  हैं  उन   में वस्तुओं और व्यक्तियों के गुण दोषों  को परखने की क्षमता होती है और वे दूसरों की योग्यता का पूरा लाभ उठाना जानते हैं  | ऐसे व्यक्तियों के पास साधारण या अयोग्य नौकर शायद ही स्थायी रूप से नौकरी कर पाते हैं |

Kaache manirmanai kaacho yeshaam buddhih pravartate.
Na teshaam sannidhau bhrutyo naamamaatr opi tishthati.

Kaanch = glass.    Mani = precious stone. a clear transparent precious mineral.   Yeshaam = whose.
Buddhi = knowledge, talent.     Pravartate = differentiates, holds good.    Na = not.    Teshaam = their.
Sannidhau = in the presence of.    Bhrutyo = servants.   Naammaatropi = naam maatra +api.
Naam maatra = nominally.    Api = even.     Tishthati = stay.

i.e.        A person who has the talent to differentiate between a precious stone and a fake precious stone made of ordinary glass,  servants engaged by him remain in his service  for a very short period ( because
he is a very strict task master).

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that  knowledgeable and discerning persons are very choosy and  are
strict task masters, as a result of which ordinary servants hardly stay with them,and are fired on being found incompetent.)

Today's Subhashita.

काकः श्वानोSकुलीनश्च बिडालः सर्प एव च |
अकुलीना च या नारी तुल्यास्ते परिकीर्तिताः ||

अर्थ -       कहा जाता है कि एक कव्वा , दोगली नस्ल का कुत्ता , बिल्ला , सांप , तथा किसी निम्न सामाजिक स्तर  की स्त्री, इन सभी के व्यवहार  में समानता होती है क्यों कि  दूसरों के  प्रति उनका व्यवहार व्यवहार सदैव अप्रत्याशित होता है |

Kaakh shwaanokuleenashcha bidalah  sarpa eva cha.
Akuleenaa cha yaa naaree tulyaaste parikeertitaa.

Kaaka = a crow.     Shwaana = a dog.      Akuleena = not belonging to a good family.
Bidaal. + a cat (he).   Sarp = a snake.     Eva = really.    Cha = and.     Naaree = a woman.
Tulyaaste = tulya + aste.    Tulya = similar, comparable.    Aste = are.   Parikeertita = called, proclaimed.

i.e.      It is commonly perceived that  a crow, a dog without any pedigree (a  mongrel) , a (he) cat, a snake,
and a woman not belonging to a good and righteous family, are comparable in their behaviour, which is always unpredictable.

Today's Subhashita;

कस्य दोषः कुले नास्ति व्याधिना को न पीडितः |
व्यसनं  केन  न  प्राप्तं  कस्य  सौख्यं  निरन्तरं  ||

अर्थ =      इस संसार मे क्या ऐसा कोई कुल (परिवार ) है जिस में कोई दोष नहीं हो, और कोई ऐसा प्राणी
है जो  व्याधियों  से पीडित न हो , और कोई  ऐसा व्यक्ति है जो व्यसनों से रहित हो , और कोई ऐसा           व्यक्ति होगा जो  निरन्तर सुखी रहा हो ?

Kasya doshah kule naasti vyaadhinaa ko n a peeditah.
vyasanam kena na praaptam kasya saukhyam nirantaram.

Kasya = whose.    Doshah = defect, blemish.     Kule = family dynasty.     Naasti = non existent.
Vyaadhinaa = diseases.    ko =  who.     Na  = not.     Peeditah = distressed, suffering from .
Vyasanam = bad habits, addiction to any thing.   Kena  = by what.    Prapta = got, have.
Saukhyam = happiness, comfort.     Nirantaram = continuously, uninterrupted.

i.e.     In this World is there a family dynasty without any blemish or defect, or is there any person who does not suffer  from diseases during his lifetime, or  a person having no addiction or a bad habit, and a person enjoying   happiness and comforts continuously ?

Today's Subhashita.

कष्टं जीवति गणको गणिका कथकश्च सेवको वैद्यः |
दिवसे    दिवसे   मरणं    परजनरञ्जनी   वृत्तिः       ||

अर्थ -       एक ज्योतिषी, गणिका (नृत्य संगीत के  द्वारा मनोरन्जन करने वाली नर्तकी ) कथा वाचक , सेवक
और वैद्य इन सब  की आजीविका एक समान अर्थात अपरिचित व्यक्तियों के  मनोरन्जन पर निर्भर  होने के  कारण उनका प्रत्येक दिन मृत्यु का साक्षात्कार करने के समान अनिश्चित और कष्टकर होता है |

(परन्तु वर्तमान समय में इसका ठीक उल्टा हो रहा है और इन व्यवसायों को करने वाले व्यक्ति दिन दूनी रात चौगुनी प्रगति कर रहे हैं , जिसे समय का फेर ही कहा जा सकता है )

Kashtam jeevati ganako ganikaa kathakashcha sevako vaidyah .
divase divase maranam parajanajanjanee vruttih.

Kashtam = difficulties.    Jeevati =  lives.     Ganako = an astrologer, a mathematician .
Ganika = a courtesan, a prostitute.    Kathakashch =  a professional story teller"s .
Sevako =  servants., attendant.     Vaidyah =  a physician practising Indian system of Medicine
called 'Ayurved'.    Divase divase =  every day.    Maranam = death.
Parajanaranjanee = Parajan +ranjanee.   Parajana= strangers , other persons.
Ranjanee = pleasing.    Vruttih = profession, job.

i.e.         Every day in the life of an astrologer, a courtesan (dancing girl), a professional story teller giving religious discourses,a servant and a  Vaidya (physician) is uncertain and painful like  facing death, because their profession has the common element of pleasing strangers every day .

( Ironically just opposite of this is happening in the modern times and all the persons mentioned hereinabove are having a roaring and easygoing business, which can be termed as a change in the attitude of persons and the prevailing circumstances.)

Today's Subhashita.

कश्चिन्मालासमं मित्रं कश्चिन्मित्रं तुलासमं  |
कश्चिन्मेरुसमं  मित्रं  कश्चिन्मित्रं  महीसमं  ||

अर्थ -        किसी व्यक्ति  से मित्रता  या तो गले में सुशोभित एक मोतियों  की  माला के समान ,  या  तराजू के पलडों के  समान  अस्थिर  कभी उपर और कभी नीचे, या  मेरु पर्वत  के समान गरिमामय और उच्च श्रेणी की , तथा  कभी धरती के समान व्यावहारिक और  सद् भाव  पूर्ण  होती है.|

Kaswhchinmaalaasamam = Kashchid +maala +samam.     Kashchid = some one.   Malaa = a garland,
necklace, a  string of beads.   Samam = alike.      Mitram = a friend.    Tulaasamam = Tulaa +samam.
Tulaa = balance ( a pair of scales used for weighing a thing)     Merusamam =  like the sacred mountain called 'Meru' having five peaks, , eulogised in Hindu Mythology.    Maheesamam = mahee + samam.
Mahee = the Earth.

i.e.         Friendship with a person can either be very close  like a garland (string of pearls),  or very demanding and wavering  like the two panes of a weighing scale going up or down,  or of the highest order  like the sacred mountain Meru, or just   practical and need based  like living in this Earth.

(Through this Subhashita the author has  classified various types of friendships by using the similes of a garland, a weighing scale, a sacred mountain and the Earth.)

Today's Subhashita.

कवयः किं न पश्यन्ति किं न भक्षन्ति वायसाः |
प्रमदा किं न कुर्वन्ति किं न जल्पन्ति मद्यपाः ||

अर्थ -      अपनी अन्तर्दृष्टि द्वार कविगण  क्या नहीं देख सकते हैं , कव्वे कौन सा उच्छिष्ठ भोजन नहीं खा
सकते हैं, एक दुष्ट और व्यभिचारिणी युवती  क्या नहीं कर सकती है तथा शराबी व्यक्ति क्या प्रलाप  करना
(अर्थहीन बातें तथा अपशब्द बोलना) छोड सकते हैं ?

(इस प्रकार के प्रश्नवाचक सुभाषित द्वारा प्रकारान्त से सुभाषितकार का तात्पर्य यह  है कि कवियों की अन्तर्दृष्टि प्रबल होती है और वे भविष्य की घटनाओं  का सही अनुमान लगा लेते हैं , कव्वे भक्ष्य अभक्ष्य   सभी कुछ खा लेते हैं , एक व्यभिचारिणी स्त्री कोई  भी वर्जित कार्य कर सकती है , तथा शराब के नशे में शराबी कुछ  भी अनर्गल बात कर सकता है | )

Kavayh kim na pashyanti kim na bhakshanti vaayasaah.
pramadaa kim na kurvanti kim na jalpanti madyapaah.

Kavayh = poets.    Kim = what.    Na  = not.     Pashyanti  = foresee,  find out, insight.
Bhakshanti = eat.    Vaayasaah = crows.      Pramadaa = a young and unrestrained woman.
Kurvanti = can do, does.    Jalpanti = do loose talk.     Madyapaah = drunkards, alcoholics.  

i.e.       What not poets can foresee, what not the crows can eat, what not can a unrestrained young woman can do, and what loose talk drunkards can not do ?

(Through this Subhashita the author emphasises in a negative way that poets have great insight to foresee things and events, the crows can eat any type of leftover food , a wanton  young woman can do any foolish action, and drunkards always resort to loose talk without bothering for its consequences.)

Today's Subhashita.

कला सेवाथ   धर्मार्थो तृष्णादारिद्र्यपद्धती |
संतोषक्षान्तिकरुणा वैराग्यं तदनु स्तुतिः ||

अर्थ -    यदि कोई  व्यक्ति  कलानुरागी , धार्मिक, धनवान पर तृष्णा रहित तथा सन्तोषी, सहनशील,सह्रदय तथा वैराग्य पथ का अनुसारण करने वाला होता है तो वह  इन गुणों के कारण समाज में  प्रशंसनीय तथा वन्दनीय  होता है |

Kalaa sevaarth dharmaartho trushnaadaaridryapaddhati.
Santoshakshaantikarunaa vairagyam tadanu stutih .

Kalaa = art, various types of skills.     Sevaath = devotion, service.   Dharmaartho =Dharma +artho.
Dharma = religiosity.    Artho = wealth.     Trushnaa = greed, desire, thirst.   Daaridrya = poverty, poor.
Trushnaa daaridrya = lack of greed ,     Paddhati =path, system, method.    Santosha = contendedness..
Kshaanti = tolerance , patience.   Karunaa = compassion, empathy.    Vairaagyam = indifference towards
worldly possessions and life.    Tadanu = thereupon, therefore.    Stuitih = adulation, praise.

i.e.        If a person is devoted to arts, is religious and wealthy but is contended and not greedy,  follows the    path of tolerance, compassion,  and remains indifferent towards worldly possessions and life,  due to all these virtues he is praised  and venerated in the society.

Today's Subhashita.

कलाभिरुच्छ्रिता वेश्या रूपशीलगुणान्विता  |
लभते  गणिका   शब्दं स्थानं  च  जनसंसदि  ||

अर्थ -         एक रूप शील और गुणसंपन्न तथा  विभिन्न कलाओं ( विशेषतः नृत्य एवं संगीत) मे अभिरुचि                       रखने वाली वेश्या का  समाज मे साधारण वेश्याओं की तुलना में सम्मानित स्थान होता है और                       उन्हें 'गणिका' कहा जाता है |      

( इस सुभाषित द्वारा प्रकारान्त से साहित्य, संगीत और विभिन्न कलाओं के महत्व को प्रतिपादित किया
गया है, जिन से संपन्न एक वेश्या को भी समाज मे सम्मानजनक  स्थान प्राप्त होता है और उसे अन्य नाम यथा  'गणिका' , 'राजनर्तकी  ' ' नगरवधू'  दिये गये हैं | )

Kalaabhirucchritaa veshyaa roopasheelagunaanvitaa.
Labhate ganikaa shabdam sthanam cha janasansadi.

Kalaabhirucchritaa = Kala + abhiruchi +shritaa.    Kala = arts (e.g. singing and dancing)
Abhiruchi = interest, a hobby.   Shritaa = well versed, dependent.    Vaishyaa = a prostitute.
Roopa = handsome form.    Sheela = good nature, character.    Gunaanvita = endowed with virtues.
Labhate = acquires , gets.    Ganikaa =  a courtesan.     Shabdam = a word, a name.
Sthanam = a place, a position.    cha - and.   Janasansadi = an assembly of men, public forums.

i.e.     A handsome and good natured prostitute well versed in various arts (singing and dancing in particular)
and dependent on them for a living, is given a more respectable name 'Ganika' and  a  prominent status in public forums

(In medieval times prostitutes expert in singing and dancing had a better and respectable status in society unlike ordinary prostitutes, and they were called by a more respectable name as 'ganika' or ' Raajnartaki'
and they entertained mainly the kings, government officials and other aristocrats in the society.  
The underlying idea behind this Subhashita is that expertise in various arts and other virtues enhance the status and respect of even  ordinary and lowly persons in the society .)

Today's Subhashita.

कलानां    ग्रहणादेव    सौभाग्यमुपजायते  |
देशकालौ त्वपेक्ष्यासां प्रयोगः संभवेन्न  वा ||

अर्थ -      जिस व्यक्ति ने विभिन्न प्रकार की कलायें और कौशल सीखा हो वह  वास्तव में बडा भाग्यवान होता है,  क्योंकि समाज को  सर्वत्र और हर समय ऐसे व्यक्तियों की आवश्यकता जो पडती है  |

Kanaanaam grahanaadeva saubhaagyamupajaayate
deshkalau tvapekshyaasaam prayogah sambhavenna vaa.

Kalaanaam = various arts and skills.   Grahanaadeva= Grahanaad + aiva .   Grahan = acquiring,
Aiva = really.    Saubhagyamupajaayate = Saubhagyam + upajaayate.   Saubhagya = good fortune.
Upajaayate = happens, appears.        Deshkaalau = every where and at all times.
Tvapekshyaasyaam = Tu + apekshyaa+ saam.    Tu = and.    Apekshaa =  need, dependence on.
Saam = they.   Prayogh = use     Sambhaven = possible.    Waa= is it ?

i.e.     A person,who has acquired many arts and skills, always enjoys good fortune, because such a person is always and every where much in demand because of his skills.
