To day's Subhashit.

तरुमूलादिषु निहितं जलमाविर्भवति पल्लवाSग्रेषु  |
निभृतं  यदुपक्रियते  तदपि  महान्तो   वहन्त्युच्चैः ||

Tarumoolaadishu nihitam jalamaavirbhavati pallavaagreshu.
Nibhrutam yadupakriyate tadapi mahaanto vantyucchaih.

Tarumoolaadishu= taru + mool + aadishu.     Taru = tree.    Mool = roots.    Aadishu= etc.
Nihitam = placed.    Jalamaavirbhavati = Jalam + aavirbhavati.     Jalam = water.
Aavirbhavati = becomes visible,  appears.    Pallavaagreshu = Pallava + agreshu.     Pallava = leaf.
Agreshu = tip, front.       Nibhrutam = quietly, without fanfare.    Yadupakriyate = Yadi + upkriyate.
Yadi = if.     Upakriyate  = obliges, serves.     Tadapi = even then.    Mahaanto = noble and righteous men.
vahantyucchaih = vahanti + ucchaih.     Vahanti = act of carrying,  conveying.     Ucchaih = upwards. 

i.e.      Just as water put at the roots of a tree sucked upwards by the roots reaches quietly up to the tips of the leaves of the tree , similarly, if noble and righteous persons help or oblige  needy persons, they too do so quietly without any fanfare .

To day's Subhashit.

आपत्स्वेव हि महतां शक्तिरभिव्यज्यते न संपत्सु  |
अगुरोस्तथा न गंन्धो  घ्राणेSस्ति यथाSग्निपतितस्य  ||

Aapatsweva hi mahataam shaktirabhivyasyate na sampatsu.
Agurostathaa na gandho ghraanesti yathaagnipatitasya.

Aapatsweva = Aapatsu + iva.      Aapatsu = calamity , misfortune.    Iva =indeed.    Hi = surely.
Mahataam = noble and righteous persons.      Shaktirabhivyajyate = Shakti + abhivyajyate.
Abhivyajyate = displayed, seen, manifest.      Sampatsu = wealth, riches, affluence..    Agur= a herb which gives sweet smell on being burnt.   Agurostathaa = agur + tathaa.    Tathaa = such, thus.     Gandho = smell.
Ghraanesti = on smelling.      Yathaagnipatitasya + yathaa + agni +patitasya.  
 Yathaa = for instance, just like.    Agni = fire.    Patitasya = on being thrown in.

i.e.     Noble and righteous persons'  real strength becomes manifest at the time of their facing calamity or misfortune and not during their period of affluence,  just like the herb Agur, which gives  a sweet smell on being put on fire and not otherwise.

To day's Subhashit.


अहो किमपि  चित्राणि चरित्राणि महात्मनाम्  |
लक्ष्मीं तृणाय मन्यन्ते तद्भारेण नमन्त्यापि   ||

Aho kimapi chitraani charitraani maqhaaqtmanaam.
Lakshmim trunaaya manyante tadbharena namantyapi.

Aho = Oh !      Kimapi = not at all.      Chitraani =  surprising.      Charitraani = character, conduct.
Mahaatmanaam = noble and virtuous persons.       Lakshmeem =  riches, wealth  
Manyante = consider, treat.    Trunaay = like a twig of grass.      Tadbhaaren = Tad + bhaarena .    
Tad - on that account.    Bhaar= load, weight.        Namantyapi = namanti + api.  
 Namanti = bend,  surrender.      Api = even  (to emphasise)

i.e.     Oh !  it is not at all surprising that noble and righteous persons treat their wealth insignificant like a blade of grass and never deviate from  their virtuous and philanthropic behaviour under the influence of their wealth.

यः प्रीणयेत्सुचरितैः पितरं स पुत्रो
यद्भर्तुरेव हितमिच्छति तत्कलत्रम्  |
तन्मित्रमापदि सुखे च समक्रियं य -
देतत्रयं जगति पुण्यकृतो लभन्ते    ||

Yah preenayetsucharitaih pitaram sa putro.
Yadbhartureva hitamicchati tatkalatram.
tanmitramaapadi sukhe cha samakriyam ya-
detatrayam jagati punyakruto labhanter.

Yah = who soever.     Preenayeta = gains the favour of.      Sucharitaih = virtuous, having good conduct.
Pitaram = father, ancestors.    Sa = he.     Putro = son.   Yadbhartureva = Yat +bhartu + iva,      Yad= who.    Bhartu = husband.  Iva = indeed.      Hitamicchati = hitam + icchati.     Hitam = interests.    icchati = desires, wishes.  Tatkalatram = tad + kalatram,     Tad = he or she.     Kalatram = wife, consort. Tanmitramaapadi = tan +mitra+ aapadi.      Tan = he.     Mitra = friend.      Apadi = misfortune, calamity.   Sukhe = happiness.
Samakriyam = acting uniformly.    ya=detatryam = yad + eta + trayam  = where all these three..
Jagati = in this World.      Punyakruto = pious and virtuous persons.     Labhante = achieve, get.

i.e.    Who soever is virtuous and takes cares of his parents and gains their favour is a real son,  a woman is a true wife who always looks after the interests of her husband,  a true friend  is a person who is always by your side to equally share your happiness and sorrows.   Only the pious and virtuous persons are fortunate to be bestowed by these three types of  persons in this World..

कुटिला लक्ष्मीर्यत्र प्रभवति न सरस्वती वसति तत्र  |
प्रायः श्वश्रूस्नुषयोर्नं  दृष्यते सौह्रदं  लोके  ||

Kutilaa Lakshmeeryatra prabhavati na Saraswati vasati tatra.
Praayh shwashrusnushyorn drashyate souhradam loke.

Kutilaa = crooked.   Lakshmi = Goddess Lakshmi.    Yatra = whereever.    Prabhavati = dominates, is powerful.     Na = not.   Saraswati = the Goddess of Learning.    Vasati = resides , lives.
Tatra = there.    Praayh =  usually, generally.    Swashrushnushorna =  Swashrusnushuyo +Na.
Swashrusnuyo =  in between sister-in laws.   Na = not    Dryasyate =  seen.   Sauhradam = friendship.
Loke = in ordinary life, i n worldly matters.

i.e.         Where ever the crooked Goddess Lakshmi dominates,  Saraswati, the Goddess of learning does not reside there, because usually in worldly matters there is never friendship among two sister-in-laws.

(The enmity between Lakshmi and Saraswati is a pet theme in Sanskrit Literature., and this Subhashit is an example of the same.)

अव्यवसायिनमलसं दैवपरं साहसाच्च परिहीनम् |
प्रमदा पतिमिव वृद्धं नेच्छति लक्ष्मीरुपस्थातुम्      ||

Avyavasaayinamalasam daivaparam sahaascch pariheenam'
Pramadaa patimiva vruddham necchati lakshmeerupasthaatum

Avyavwasaayinamalasam  =  Avyavasaayin + Alasam.     Avyavasaayin = inactive, making no efforts.
Alasam = lazy and dull.       Daivaparam = depending on one's fate.    Saahasaccha = courage.
Pariheenam = without.       Pramadaa = a handsome and young woman.     Patimiva = pati + iva.
Pati =husband.    Iva = as,  very.      Vruddham = aged.       Necchati =  Na + icchati.      Na = not.
Icchati = desires, likes.     Lakshmeerupasthaatum = Lakshmi + upasthatum.   Upasthaatum = come near.

i.e    Goddess Lakshmi never likes to come near  those persons who are inactive, lazy, relying more on their fate rather than their efforts, bereft of courage and  marry a young and beautiful woman in their old age.

(In this Subhashit the author indirectly outlines the traits to be avoided if one wants to become rich , and particularly condemns the tendency among aged persons of marrying young women.)

लक्ष्मि क्षमस्व वचनीयमिदं  दुरुक्त-
मन्धीभवन्ति पुरुषास्त्वदुपासनेन  |
नोचेत्कथं कमलपत्र विशालनेत्रो
नारायणः स्वपिति  पन्नगभोगतल्पे  ||

Lakshmi kshmaswa vachaneeyamidam durukta=
Mandheebhawati purushaastweadupaasenena.
Nochetkatham kamalpatra vishaaalnetro.
Naarayanh swapiti pannagabhogatalpe.

Ksdhmaswa = forgive me.   Vachaniyamidam = Vachaney + idam.      Vachan = utterance.
Idam = this.        Duruktam = badly spoken,  harsh words       Andhee =  dim, oblivious..
Purushaah = persons.        Twadupaasanena =   your worship.      Nochetkathan = nochet + katham
Nochet = otherwiswe.     Katham= tell.        Kamal Patra = petals of a lotus flower.     Vishaal = large.
Netro = eyes.       Narayanh = Another name of Lord Vishnu, whose consort is Goddess Lakshmi.
Swapiti = sleeps , reclines over.     Pannagbhogtalpe = Pannag + bhog+ talpe.
Pannag =  a serpent.     Bhog - coil.     Talp = couch,  bed.
(Lord Vishnu is depicted in paintings reclining on the coil of a very large serpent called 'Shesh Naag' having 1000 hoods, used as a shade  over His head and His consort Lakshmi at His feet. That is why another name of Lord Vishnu is 'Shesh shaayee' i.e. using Shesh Naag as a couch or bed for the purpose of sleeping.)

i.e.     O Goddess Lakshmi  ! please forgive me for uttering these harsh words about you.  Whosoever worships you becomes dim  and oblivious.  Otherwise tell me O mother !  having  large eyes like petals of a lotus flower, how is it that your husband Lord Vishnu sleeps on the coil of Shesh Naag used as a couch ?

(Here is another Subhashit making fun of those persons who are favoured by Lakshmi  (rich persons in contrast to learned persons having favour of Goddess Saraswati)  There are numerous examples of eccentric   behaviour of very rich persons who live very poorly, the late Nizam of Hyderabad being an apt example.)

आलस्यं स्थिरतामुपैति भजते चापल्यमुद्योगितां
मूकत्वम्  मितभाषितां वितनुते मौग्ध्यं भवेदार्जनम्  |
पात्रापात्रविचारभारविरहो यच्छत्युदारात्मतां
मातार्लक्ष्मि तवप्रसादवशतो दोषा अपि स्वर्गुणा:  ||

Aalasyam sthirataamupaiti bhajate chaapalyamudyogitaam.
Mookatwam mitabhaashitaam vitanute mogdhyam bhavedaarjanam'
Paatraapaatra vichaarabhaar viraho yachatyu daaraatmataam.
Maatarlakshmi tavaprasaad vashato doshaa api swargunaah.

Aalasym =laziness,   Sthirataa = stability.      Upaiti = gets.     Bhajate = worship.
Chaapalyamudyogitaa = Chaapalya + udyogitaa.      Chaapalya = fickleness, unsteady.
Udyogitaa = industriousness.      Mookatwam = dumbness.     Mitabhaashitaa = soft spoken.
Vitanute = accomplished.      Mogdhyam = ignorance.     Bhavedaarjavam = Bhawet + aarjavam.
Bhaved = becomes.    Aarjavam = sincerety. frankness.  Paatraapaatra= paatra + apaatra.
Paatra = worthy.    Apaatra = unworthy.   Vichaar = pondering over, idea.    Bhaar = burden.
Viraho = suffering from.    Yachatyudaaraatmataam =  Yachati + daara +Aatmataaam.
Yacchati = supports.      Daara = wife.    Atmataam = one's own choldren..     Matarlakshmi = Mother Lakshmi.
Tava= your.   Prasaad = favour, graciousness.   Vashato = due to.    Doshaa = faults, shortcomings.
Api = even, too.   Swargunaah = Swa + gunaah.     Swa = one's own.    Gunaah = merits, virtues.

i.e.     O Mother Lakshmi, those persons who worship you are considered firm and stable even if they are lazy, those who are fickle and unsteady are considered as industrious, those who are dumb are treated as soft spoken,  ignorant persons are treated as sincere and accomplished , an unworthy  person is treated as a most worthy and supporter of his wife and  children. O mother Lakshmi , due to your graciousness and favour , even the shortcomings in a person become his virtues.

(Yesterday I had posted a Subhashit denigrating  Goddess Lakshmi . Now here is another Subhashit eulogising her in a negative way. It is one of the characteristics of the Subhashit poetry,that, coming as it does from various hands, it is both one sided and exhaustive - one sided when viewed  only in parts, and exhaustive when viewed as a whole. The real truth is hidden in between and left for the readers to ponder over it.)

हे लक्ष्मि क्षणिके स्वभाव चपले मूढे च पापोSधमे
न त्वम् चोत्तमपात्रमिच्छसि  खले प्रायेण दुश्चारिणी  |
ये देवार्चनसत्यशौचनिरता ये  चापि धर्मे रता
स्तेभ्यो लज्जसि निर्दये गतमतिर्नीचो जने वल्लभः ||

He lakshmi kshnike swabhava chapale moodhe cha paapodhame'
Na twam chottamapaatramicchasi khale praayena duschaarinee.
Ye devaarchansatyashauchnirataa ye chaapi dharme rataa.
stebhyo lajjasi nirdaye gatamatirneecho jane vallabhah.

He = O !     Lakshmi =  Goddess of riches.     Kshnike = temporary.   Swabhaava = nature.
Chapal =  wavering and unsteady.   Moodh = foolish.    Paapodham = lowest among wicked persons.
Twam = you.     Chottamapaatramicchati = cha +uttam+ paatram +icchasi.     Cha = also.
Uttam = superior.   Paatra = person .   Icchasi = desires, selects.    Khale = wicked persons.
Praayena = most probably.    duschaarini = wrong doer.     Ye = those.   Devarchan = worship of Gods.
Satya = truth.    Shauch =cleanliness.    Nirata = engaged in, observe.     Chaapi = also.
Dharma = Religion.    Dharme rataa = religious minded.    Stebhyo = to them.    Lajjasi = puts to shame.
Nirdaye = cruel.   Gatamati = without and conviction or perception.    Neech = lowly.
Jane = persons.     Ballabhah = liked by, adored.

i.e.   O Lakshmi  ! by nature you are unsteady, wavering, foolish, and extremely wicked. You never select noble and righteous persons to shower your bounty and generally associate with wicked and characterless persons.   O cruel Goddess !  you are without any conviction or perception and shower your favours on lowly persons and adored by them, whereas  put to shame those persons who are engaged in worshipping Gods, are religious, observe cleanliness and are truthful by nature.

(I had posted many Subhashits on the merits and demerits of Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati, which is a very favourite theme of Sanskrit Literature. Here is another Subhashit, which outlines the demerits of Lakshmi in stark contrast to the virtues of Saraswati.   Once a person becomes learned he remains so throughout his lifetime and maintains all the virtues associated with a noble and learned person. On the other hand there are numerous examples of very cruel and wicked person who are filthy rich and a curse on the society. Similarly there are numerous examples of rich persons becoming paupers , which proves that Lakshmi (riches) is a temporary phenomenon.  All these aspects have been very beautifully highlighted in this Subhashit.)

To day's Subhashit.

मृत्युं  प्रमादमेवाह  भगवान्बादरायणः    |
तस्मात्तद्धंसने दक्षो यः स  मृत्युंजयो भवेत्  ||

Mrutyum praamadmevaah bhagwaanbaadaraayanh.
Tasmaatadddhmsane daksho yah sa Mrutyumjayo bhavet.

Mrutyu = death      Pramaad = negligence, carelessness.      Evah = already.     Bhagwaan = God
Baadraayana = written or composed by.     Tasmad = therefore.   Tad = to it.     Dhwansane = destorying.
Daksho = expert.   Yah = whosoever.    Sa =  he.    Mrutyumjayo = one who has conquered death, immortal.      Bhawet =  becomes.

i.e.     Death and negligence are the creations of God Almighty.  Only a person who is expert in destroying both of these can be immortal.

(Through this Subhashit the author indirectly conveys the Truth that death and carelessness are the creations of God and no one can escape these .)

गुणिनं जनमालोक्य निज बन्धन शङ्कया |
राजलक्ष्मीः कुरङ्गनेव दूरं दूरं पलायते.  ||

Guninam janamaalokya nij bandhan shankayaa,
Rajlakshmih kuranganeva dooram dooram palaayate.


Guninam = knowledgeable and learned.     Janmaalokya = Jana + aalokya.     Jana = person.
Aalikya = on seeing.   Nij = one's own.      Bandhan = bondage.     Shankayaa = apprehending.
Rajlakshmee = Raj +Lakshmi,       Raj = kindom.        Lakshmi, the Goddes of riches  
Rajlakshmi = Goddess Lakshmi staying with kings.          Kuranganeva = Kurangen + iva.      
 Kurang = a deer.    Iva = like.      Dooram = far away.   Palaayate = runs,escapes.

i.e.        Seeing a knowledgeable and learned person, Goddess Lakshmi escapes far away like a deer , apprehending her bondage at the hands of such a person.

(In Sanskrit and Hindi literature it is assumed that there is enmity between Saraswati (the Goddess of learning) and Lakshmi (the Goddess of riches) and they avoid staying together, which implies that a person who is rich is seldom learned and a learned person is likewise is not rich.  This is a pet theme of poets and literary persons often used in  their writings in a lighter vein.)

Today's Subhashit.

प्रमादिनां न वित्तानि न विद्या वनितापि च |
न हि मद्यजुषा क्वापि साधनान्यथ धीश्च ही:  ||

Pramaadinaam na vittani na vidyaa vanitaapi cha.
na hi madyajushaa kwaapi saadhanaanyath dheescha hee.

Pramaadinaa = persons who are careless and negligent.     Vittaani = money, wealth.     Cha = also.
Vanitaapi= vanitaa + api.      Vanitaa = wife, woman.    Api = also.      Na = not.    Hi = therefore.
Madyajushaa = a drunkard (a person addicted to liquor).   Kwaapi = also.  
Sadhanaanyath = saadhan + anyatrhaa.    Saadhan = means, efficiency.   Anayatha = otherwise.
Dhee = intelligence, wisdom.

i.e.        Careless and negligent persons are devoid of wealth and  knowledge as also a successful marital life.  Likewise, a drunkard is also not  efficient, wise and intelligent.

दुःखार्णव   सहस्राणि  प्रमादेन   पदे  पदे |
प्रत्यक्षमुपलभ्यन्ते स कार्योSतो च कुत्रचित्  ||

Duhkhaarnava sahasraani pramaaden pade pade.
Pratyakshamupalabhyante sa kaaryoto cha kutrachit.

Dukhaarnava = Dukh + arnava .    Dukh = suffering.    Arnava = ocean, sea.
Sahasraani = thousands.     Pramaaden = by negligence, carelessness.mistakes.
Pad = step.    Pade pade = at every step.     Pratyakshamupalabhyante = Pratyaksh + uplabhyante.
Pratyaksh = present before the eyes, clearly visible.   Upalabhyante = available.    Sa = that.
Kaaryo = work to be done, deed, function.     Ato = for that reason.   Kutrachit = where ?

i.e.    If a person is careless and commits mistakes at every step while performing a task, he faces before his own eyes thousands of oceans of miseries and suffering , and one can imagine what  will happen to that task in hand. ( It will never get completed).

श्रोतं श्रुतेनैव न कुण्डलेन दानेन पाणिर्न तु कङ्कणेन  |
विभाति कायः खलु सज्जनानां परोपकारेर्न तु चन्दनेन  ||

Shrotam shrutenaiva na kundalean daanen paanirn tu kankanen.
vibhaati kaayh khalu sajjananaam paropakaarern tu chandanen.

Shrotum = ears.    Shrutenaiva = Shruten + iva.    Shruten = by listening to scriptures.   Iva = like.
Kundalen = by ear-rings.    Daanen = by giving alms      Paanirn = Paani + na.    Paani = hands.
na = not.    Kankanen = by bracelets..      Vibhati = becomes beautiful    Kaayh = body, personality.
Khalu = certainly.       Sajjanaanaam = noble and righteous persons.   Paropaken = by helping others, doing philanthropic work.          To = by.      Chandanen = by smearing sandalwood paste.

i.e.     A person's ears get glorified by listening to scriptures and  not by wearing ear-rings, hands are adored by giving alms to the poor and needy people and not by wearing bracelets.  Likewise the personality of a noble and righteous person is appreciated by his philanthropic work and not by smearing sandalwood paste over the body.

धनानि जीवितं चैव  पराSSर्थे प्राज्ञ उत्स्रजेत   ।
तन्निमित्तो वरं त्यागो विनाशे नियते सति   ।

Dhanaani jeevitam chaiva paraarthe pragya utsrajet.
Tannimitto varam tyaago vinaasho niyate sati.

Dhanaani = to money.    Jevitam = supporting oneself.    Chaiva = cha + iva.     Iva =indeed, essential.
Cha = an alphabet used to complete a word.      Paraarth = for the benefit of others
Praagya = wise and learned person, a Pandit.     Utsrajet = hand out, give.  Tannimitto = tad +nimitcto.    Tad = for that.    Nimitto = reason.      Varam = rather than , better.     Tyaago = sacrifice,relinquish.     Vinaashe =  destruction.     Niyate =fate, destined.     Sati = end , destruction.

i.e.    Although money is essential for supporting oneself, wise and learned persons do not hesitate to donate it to the needy persons for their benefit, for the reason that they are well aware that ultimately its destruction is a certainty.

To day's Subhashit.

     Yesterday I had posted a Subhashit extolling the virtues of an ideal household. Here is another Subhashit which outlines the traits of a failed householder.

क्रोशन्तः शिशवः  सवारि सदनं पंकाSSवृतं   चाSङ्गणं
शय्या  दंशवती  च  रूक्ष्ममशनं  धूमेन  पूर्णः   गृहम्    |
भार्या निष्ठुरभाषिणी प्रभुरपि  क्रोधेन पूर्णा सदा
स्नानं शीतलवारिणा  हि सततं धिग्धिग्ग्रुहस्थाश्रमम्  ||

Krtoshantah shishawh savaari sadanam pamkaavrutam chaanganam.
Shayyaa danshvatee cha rookshmamashanm dhoomen poornh gruham.
Bhaaryaa nishthurbhaashanee prabhurapi krodhena poornh sadaa.
snaanam sheetalvaarinaa hi satatam dhigdhiggruhasthaashramam.

Kroshanth = crying.     Shishwah = children.    savaari = sa + waari.   Sa = with.   waari = water.  Sa-varri =with water.    Sadanam = residence, house.    Savaari sadanam = a house with a leaking. roof.  Pankaavrutam = Pank = mud, slush.   Aavrutam - covered with.  Aangnam = court yard.
Shayaa = bed (here it refers to bed room).   Danshwati = stinging i.e. infested with mosquitoes.
Rookshmmashanam =Rooksha + ashanam .  Rookshma= rough,  Ashanam = food.
Dhoomen = with smoke .      Poorna = full of    Gruham = house, residence.
Bharyaa = wife.    Nishthurbhaashini = ill speaking, rude.  Preabhurapi = Prabhu + api.
Prabhu = owner, master.    Api = too , also.     Krodhen = with anger.    Poornaa = full of. Sadaa = always.     Snaan = bathing.   sheetal = cold    vaarinaa = water.    Hi = with.   Satatam = always.
Dhigdhig = shame on.     Gruhasthaashramah = order of a household, family life.

i.e.     Shame on such a household,where children cry all the time, the roof of the house is leaking, the courtyard is full of mud and dust, the bedroom is infested with mosquitoes, food available is rough and without any flavour, the house is always full of smoke, the wife is rude and ill speaking and the owner of the house (husband) is always full of anger, and the members of the household are always compelled to take bath in cold water.

सानन्दं सदनं सुताश्च सुधियः कान्ता न दुर्भाषिणी
सन्मित्रं  सधनं स्वयोषिति  रतिश्चाSSज्ञापराः सेवकाः   |
आतिथ्यं  शिवपूजनं  प्रतिदिनं  मिष्टान्नपानं  गृहे
साधोः संगमुपासते  हि सततं धन्यो  गृहस्थाश्रमः   ||

Saanandam sadanam sutaasch sudhiyah kaantaa na durbhaashini.

Saadhoh sangmupaasate hi satatam dhanyo grahasthaashramah.

Saanand = comfortable, joyful.     Sadan = residence.    Sutaascha = children.
Sudhiyah = wise and learned.    Kaantaa = wife.   Na = not      Durbhaashini = rude and ill speaking,
Sanmitram  = good and reliable friends.     Sadhanam = rich.    Swayoshiti = one's wife.
Rati = sexual pleasure.    Swayoshiti Ratih =  being faithful to wife in sexual matters.
Aagyaaparaa = obedient.    Sevakaah = servants.     Aatithyam = hospitable to the guests.
Shiva poojanam = worshiping Lord Shiva.    Pratidinam = every day.    Mishtannpaanam = enjoying tasty food.     Grahe = in the household.      Saadhoh = noble persons.   Sangamupaasate = sang + upaaste.      Sang = company.     Upaste = keeping the company of, sit near.   Hi = surely.
Satatam = always, continuous.     Dhanyo = blessed.    Grahasthaashramah = family life.

i.e.     A person's family life is peaceful and successful if he has a comfortable house to live in, his children are wise and learned, his wife is not rude and ill speaking, he has good and reliable friends, he is faithful to his wife in sexual matters, has obedient servants, is hospitable to guests, and every day worships Lord Shiva and enjoys tasty food, and always keeps the company of noble persons.
          Surely blessed be such a householder.

( In Hindu Religion the life span of a person is divided into four orders namely Brahmacharyaashram, Grahasthaashram, Vanaprastha and Sanyaas, each order being of 25 years. The first order is assigned  for education, the second one for getting married and raising a family, the third one for selfless service to the society and the last one for renouncing the worldly life and doing meditation.  In this Subhashit all the pre-requisites for a successful and comfortable family life have been beautifully outlined by the author.).

To day's Subhashit.

इतरकर्मफलानि यद्दच्छ्या विलिखितानि सहे चतुरानन |
अरिसिकेषु कवित्वनिवेदनं शिरसि मालिखमालिखमालिख ||

Itarkarmaphalaani yaddcchayaa vilikhitaani sahe chaturaanana.
Arishikeshu kavitva nivedsanam shirashi maalikhmaalikhmaalikh.

i.e.   O God Almighty (Chaturaanan) ! whatever destiny you may desire and consider reasonable  about my life's other events is acceptable to me, but please do not write in my destiny that I may be compelled to listen to the sub-standard poetry by a novice and insensitive so-called poet.

Itar = the other.    Karmaphalaani = fruit or recompense of one's actions in Life.
Yaddcchayaa = Yad + icchayaa .     Yad = whatever.    Icchayaa = desire.
Vilikhitaani =  write about.    Sahe = and consider reasonable.
Chaturaanan = another name of God Brahma, assigned the duty of writing (deciding) the destiny of all living beings on this Earth. He is supposed to write the destiny on every person's forehead.        Arasikeshu = a person not having aesthetic and discriminating taste.
Kavitwa = poetry.  Nivedanam = reciting, telling.   Shirashi = on the forehead.
maalikh = maa + likha.    maa =not .    Likha = write.    Maalikh = please do not write. (The word 'maalikh' has been repeated thrice to  emphasise.)

(There is a tendency among the poets to catch hold of another poet and recite to him his latest creation, even if the other poet may not be willing and inclined to listen to it, particularly if the other poet and his poetry be sub-standard.  In this Subhashit the author has highlighted and made fun of this tendency among the poets.)

To day's Subhashit..

पत्रं नैव यदा करीर विटपे दोषो वसन्तस्य किं      
नोलूकेन विलोक्यते यदि दिवा सूर्यस्य किं दूषणं  |
धारा नैव पतन्ति चातकमुखे मेघस्य किं दूषणं
यद्धात्रा निजभाल पट्ट लिखितं तन्मार्जितुं कः क्षमः ||

Patram naiva yadaa kareera vitape dosho vasantasya kim.
nolookena vilokyate yadi divaa Sooryasya kim dooshanam.
Dhaaraa naiva patanti chaatakamukhe meghasya kim dooshanam
Yaddhaatraa  nijabhaala patta likhitam tanmaarjitum kah kshmh.

i.e.   If the Kareek tree does not produce leaves , where is the fault of the Spring season, and if an owl is not able to see during day time, is this a shortcoming or defect  of the Sun ?   If the  raindrops do not fall on the mouth of the Chatak (Papiha), where is the shortcoming in a raining cloud ?   Who is able to remove (or change) one's own destiny, that has been written by Bramha (God Almighty) on his forehead ?

Patram = leaves.   Naiva = not.     Yadaa = if      Kareer = a tree which has only thorns and no leaves.
Vitap = tree.    Dosaho = fault.    Vasantasya = of the spring season.    Kim = what ?
Nolooken = Na + ulookena.    Na = not.    Ulook = Owl.   Ulooken = by the owl.   Vilokyate = seeing.
Divaa = day time.    Sooryasya + of the Sun.     Dooshanam = shortcomings ,defect.
Dhaara = stream of water or rain drops.      Patanti = falls on.    Mukhe = on the mouth.
 Chaatak = a bird, also called 'papihaa' in Hindi, which, according to Sanskrit and Hindi literature, prefers to drink only the  rain water falling from a cloud only when there is  a specific stellar position of 'Swati Nakshtra" is ruling in the sky and would rather remain thirsty and cries 'piu piu'.
Megha = cloud.    Meghasya = of the cloud.       Yaddhatra = Yad + Dhaatra.    Yad = what, if.
Dhaatra (Vidhaata) = One of the three main Gods of Hindu mythology, namely Bhrmha, who is assigned the task of creator and writer of the destiny of every person on his forehead.
Nij = one's own.  Bhaal = forehead (skull).     Tanmaarjitum = tam + maarjitum.    Tam= to it.
Maarjitum = rubbed, removed.    Kah = who.    Kshmah =  capable of, able to do.

(This Subhashit has been classified under the group "Brahmalikhitam" emphasising the fact that people are helpless in changing or removing what has been destined for them by the God Almighty and in spite of having all facilities and amenities around him,one is not able to enjoy them if he is not destined  to do so, by citing the above three examples.)

To day's Subhashit.

नीरसान्यपि रोचन्ते कार्पासस्य फलानि मे  |
येषां  गुणमयं  जन्म  परेषां  गुह्यगुप्तये   ||

Neerasaanyapi rochante kaarpaasasya phalaani me.
yeshaam gunamaym janma pareshaam guhyaguptaye,

Neerasaanyapi = neerasani + api.       Neerasani = without any juice .    Api = even.
Rochante =  liked.     Kaarpasasya = of  the cotton plant.  Phalaani = fruits.    me = to me.
Yeshaam = whose.     Gunamaym =  fibre of raw cotton, consisting of numerous fine threads.
Janma = birth, creation.        Pareshaam = others       Guhya= hidden.     Guptaye = genital organs.

i.e.    Although the fruits of a cotton plant do not have any juicy pulp, even then it is liked by me (all), because Mother Nature has given birth to it with its fibrous contents (consisting of numerous fine threads) to conceal the genital organs of people.

( Cotton fibre when spun and made into thread is used to produce cloth, which is ultimately converted into clothes  to cover the genitals by civilised human beings. The idea behind this Subhashit is that every thing produced by Nature has its own use, depending on the ingenuity of Man)

To day's Subhashit.

यः सुन्दरस्तद्वनिता कुरूपा या सुन्दरी  सा पतिरूपहीना   |
यत्रोभयं  तत्र  दरिद्रता च   विधेर्विचित्राणि  विचेष्टितानि   ||

Yah sundarstatdvanitaa kurupaa yaa sundari saa patiroopaheenaa.
Yatrobhayam tatra daridrataa cha vidhervichitraani vicheshtitaani

Yah = whosoever.    Sundarastadvanitaa =( Sundar + tad + vanitaa)  Sundar = beasutiful.
Tad = there .    Vanitaa = woman, wife.     Kuroopaa = ugly looking.      Yaa = who.
Sundari = beautiful woman.      Saa = she (her).    Pati = husband.    Roopheenaa (roop + heena)
Roop = appearance, beauty.   Heena = deprived of.    Roopheena = not having beauty i.e.ugly looking.
Yatrobhayam (Yatra =ubhayam)  Yatra =  where.   Ubhayam = both of them..   Tatra = there.
Daridrataa = poverty.    Cha = also.     Vidhervichitraani (Vidhe +vichitraani)
Vidhe (Vidhaataa) = Providence, God's way of taking care of all creatures.  In Hindu Religion there are three main Gods namely Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesh assigned the duties of creator, preserver and destroyer respectively. Vidhi or Vidhaata are other names of Brahmaa.      Vichitraani = strange, odd.
Vicheshtitaani = behaviour, actions.

i.e.        If a person is beautiful his wife is ugly looking and if a woman is very beautiful her husband is ugly looking, and if perchance both are beautiful they are found to be very poor.  Such strange are the actions and behaviour of the God Almighty.

To day's Subhashit.

शुद्धकांस्यरचिताSपि लालिता जिह्वा यदि न योजिता भवेत्   |
किं तया करणमस्ति घंट्या जिह्वया ध्वनिमतां  हि पूज्यया ||

Shuddhakaamsyarachitaa laalitaa jihvaa yadi na yojitaa bhavet'
kim tathaa karanmasti ghmtyaa jihvyaa dhwanimataam hi poojyayaa.

Shuddha = pure.    Kaansya = bronze,  brass.     Rachitaapi = rachita + api.     Rachitaa = made out of.
Api = even (to express emphasis).    Laalitaa = fondled, indulged.     Jihwaa = tongue (here it means a small round striker suspended inside a bell, which, when struck on the inner surface of the bell produces loud sound )        Yadi = if.    Naa = not.     Yojitaa = attached, harnessed.       Bhavet = happen.
Kim = then, what ?        Tayaa = that is why.      Karanamasti = assigned duty, function.   Ghantyaa = bell's
Dhwani = loud sound.    Dhwanimataam = producing loud sound.     Hi = surely, for.
Poojyayaa = venerated, worshipped.

i.e.       Even if a bell may be made out of pure bronze metal, if a freely moving striker is not attached inside it, then the bell is unable  perform its assigned function (and is of no use), because a bell is venerated only when it produces a loud sound.

( Through this Subhashit the author has indirectly  emphasised the importance of good diction (manner of speaking with proper choice of words) in a person.  Even if he may be good looking and well attired outwardly, if he is dumb or unable to speak properly , he is just like a bell without a striker inside it.)

गङ्गेवाSघविनाशनी जनमनः संतोषसच्चन्द्रिका
          तीक्ष्णांशोरापि सत्प्रभेव जगदज्ञानाSन्धकाराSपहा  |
छायेSवाखिलतापनाशनकरी  स्वर्धेनुवत्कामदा
          पुण्येरेव  हि लभ्यते सुकृतिभि: सत्संगतिर्दुर्लभा   ||

Gangevaaghavinaashanee janamanah santoshasacchandrikaa,
Teekshnaashorapi satprabheva jagadgyaanandhakaaraapaha.
cheyevaakhiltaapnaashankaree swardhenuvatkaamadaa'
punyereva hi labhayatge sukrutibhih satsamgatirdurlabhaa.

Gangevaa = like the sacred river  Ganges.  Agha = sins.    Vinaashani = destroyer,    Janmanh = minds of people.   Santosh = pleasure, delight.  Sachhindrikaa = Sat +Chandrikaa.     Sat =beneficial.
Chandrikaa = moonlight.     Teekshnaanshorapi = Teekshnaansho + api.    Teekshnaansh = bright Sun.
Api = also      Satprabheva = beneficial illumination.    Jagadgyaanaandhakaaraapaha = Jagat + agyaan +
andhakaar + apahaa..     Jagat = world.   agyaan = ignorance..    Andhakaar = darkness.
Apahaa = removing.      Chaayevaakhiltaapnaashanakaree = Chaaya + iva +akhila +taap +naashankari.
Chaaya = shade    Iva = like. akhil = entire,    Taap = heat.    Naashankari = destroyer , remover.  Swardhenu = swa+ dhenu.         Swa = one's own.    Dhenu =  cow .    Kaamada = fulfiller of desires, gracious.   Punya = good work, virtues.     Labhate = acquires.      Sukriti = prosperity, good deeds.
Satsangati = association with righteous and noble persons.    Durlabhaa = scarce, rare, difficult to find.

i.e.      Noble and righteous persons are like the sacred river Ganges for destroying sins, like the cool moonlight for giving pleasure to others, like the bright Sun's light for removing the darkness of ignorance from the world, like a cool shade for removing the heat of all miseries, and gracious like one's own cow in supporting the family. The association and patronage of such noble persons is very rare and one gets it only if he has done good deeds and has earned 'Punya' by doing so.

("Punya" is a concept of Hindu Religion, which implies that if a person is virtuous and does good deeds, he earns plus points or 'Punya" , which, like a bank balance grows and he in his next life cycle or even during his lifetime is rewarded by God Almighty and enjoys prosperity and good lifestyle. Through this Subhashit he author has praised the virtues of noble persons .)

महाSनुभावसंसर्गः   कस्य   नोन्नतिकारकः  |
रथ्याSम्बुजान्हवीसङ्गात्त्रिदशैरपि वन्द्यते  ||

Mahaanubhavasmsargah kasya nonnatikaarakah.
Rathyaamujaanhveesangaattridashairapi vandyate.

mahaanubhaavasansargah = Mahaa +anubhaava + sansargah.     Mahaa = great.
Anubhava = degnity, authority     Mahaanubhava = a liberal and noble person.
Sansarga = living together,    Kasya = whose.    Nonnatikaarakah = na +unnati +kaarakah
Na = not.    Unnati =advancement, elevation.   Kaarakah = causing, making, a factor.
Rathyaambujaanhveesangaatrridashairapi = rathya =ambu + Jaanhavee +sangaat +Tridashai+ api.
Rathya =  street, road    Ambu = water.    Jaanhavi =  the sacred river Ganges.
Sangaat = meeting with.      Tridash = heaven, devine.      Api = also,  too.  Vandyate = venerated .

i.e.     There is no reason as to why living together with liberal and noble persons will not result in advancement and elevation in the status of a person, e.g. even the water from the drain of a street merging  in the sacred river Ganges loses its identity and is venerated just like the heavenly river Ganges.

( Through this Subhashit the author exhorts people to keep company of noble and righteous persons, which results in  advancement and elevation of their status, by citing the example of a drain merging in the river Ganges.)
