It is therefore truly said that excess of any thing ,even if for a noble purpose, must be given up.

(In this Subhashita there is reference to the Demon King Bali's charitable nature, as detailed in Indian mythology.  Bali conquered all the Gods and ruled  the entire earth. So at the request of  Gods, Lord Vishnu knowing the weakness of Bali approached him as a dwarf beggar and requested for a piece of land measuring three foot steps.  Knowing very well that Vishnu has come in the disguise of a dwarf, Bali agreed to his request. At this Vishnu measured the entire Earth in three foot steps and made Bali as a captive.   The episodes of Duryodhan and Ravan are well known in Mahabharat and Ramayan epics respectively.   'Atih Sarvatra Varjayet' is one of the oft quoted sentence.   The episode of Bali and Vishnu as a dwarf (vaaman) is known as 'Vaaman Avatar'  among the 10 incarnations of Vishnu knowen as 'Dashaavatar' in Hindu Mythology.

has been integrated into Religion, which shows the foresight of our ancestors, which, most unfortunately is being neglected now.)

(The  line "Yathaa rajaa tathaa prajaa" from the above Subhashita is the most oft quoted one now a days while commentinmg on the anarchy and chaos prevailing in many countries of the world and proves the truth behind it.)

Today's Subhashita.

s
Yathaayathaiva snehhena bhooyishthamupacharyate.
Dhatte tathaatathaa tapam mahaavaishvaanarah khalah.

Dhatte =  exists, gives.     Tatha tathaa = thus, such.    Taapm = heat , pain.   Maha =mighty, big.
Vaishvaanara = fire.       Khalah = mean and wicked person.

i.e.     Just as by putting copious amount of oil on a  fire, the intensity of a big fire increases, similarly showing kindness and affection to a mean and wicked person results in increase in his meanness and capacity to torment others. So, wicked persons are like a raging fire.

( In this Subhashita the two different meanings of the word 'Sneha' have been skillfully used in a simile for the fire and wicked persons.   By putting oil or showing courtesy to the fire and wicked persons respectively, results in increasing the intensity of their capacity to harm others.So the author says that wicked persons are like a raging fire.)

Today's Subhashita.

Apekshante na sneham na paatram na dashaantaram.
Sadaalokahitaasaktaa ratnadeepaa ivottamaa.

Apakshante =   desire,expect.      Na = not.     Sneha = (i) affection, friendship. (ii) oil, fat.

Ratnadeepa = a lamp in which jewels give out light.    Ivottamaa = iva + uttamaa.
Iva = like (comparison)     Uttamaa = best (noble and righteous persons.)

i.e.      Nobler and righteous persons do not expect love and affection in return for their benevolent deeds, nor do they discriminate between the recipients of their benevolence, because they are deeply involved in actions beneficial to the mankind and brighten the society like a lamp of jewels (Ratnadeep) which unlike an earthen lamp does not require oil and cotton wick and proper condition to burn and shed light.

Note :-  The above Subhashita is a fine example of penmanship. The author has used two different meanings of the words (i)Sneha (ii) Paatra and (iii) Dashaantaram  by using the simile of a lamp to highlight the qualities of  noble and righteous persons.  An ordinary lamp needs oil and cotton wick and favourable conditions for lighting and illuminating the environment, but noble and righteous persons serve the mankind  without differentiating  between recipients and expecting anything in return. like a self illuminating 'Ratnadeep'
