To day's Subhashita.

आयुप्रश्ने  दीर्घमायुर्वाच्यं  मौहूर्तिकोर्द्विज:      |
जीवन्तो बहु मन्यन्ते मृताः प्रक्ष्यन्ति कं  पुनः  ||

Aayuprashne deerghamaayurvachyam mauhoortikordwijah.
Jeevanto bahub manyante mrutaah prakshyanti km punah.

Aayuprashne = aayu = age, duration of life.   Prashne = question.  Aayuprashne = question about the  duration (longivity) of one's life.    Deerghamaayurvachyam = Deergh + aayu+ vaachyam..
Deergh = long.    Vaachyam = to be spoken.     Mauhoortikordvijah =mauhoortika  + dvijah.
Mauhoortika = an astrologer.     Dvijah = a brahmin. (As per Hindu religion the society is divided into four main castes i.e. Brahmin, Kshareiya, Vaishya and Shoodra. The first three castes are also termed as 'Dwija'- twice born- after a Yagyopavit ceremony, just like baptism in Christianity)     Jeevanto = long lived.     Bahu = much.  Manyante =  will be honoured.      Mrutaah = the dead persons. Prakshyanti = ask for.     Km(कं) = happiness.      Punah = again and again.

i.e.        A Brahmin astrologer , on being being asked by a person about his life-span should always say to that person that he will be long lived.   If he really lives long,he will honour the astrologer very much, and even if he dies it will be immaterial, because dead persons do not come to enquire about their welfare again.

( Like the yesterday's Subhashita. this one also deals with human psychology about knowing one's own future and exploitation of this human weakness by astrologers and soothsayers.)

To day's Subhashita.

पुत्र इत्येव पितरि कन्यकेत्येव मातरि  |
गर्भप्रश्नेषु कथयन्  दैवज्ञो विजयी भवेत्  ||

Putra ityeva pitari kanyaketyeva maatari.
Garbhaprashneshu kasthayan daivagyo vijayee bhavet.

Putra = son.    Ityeva = iti +eva.     Iti =this.    eva =really.    Pitari = to the father.
Kanyaketyeva = Kanyaka+iti+eva.     Kanyaka = girl.      Maatari = to the mother.
Garbhaprasjhneshu = garbh +prashjneshu.      Garbh = foetus, unborn child.
Prashneshu = questions.    Garbhprashneshu = questions about the sex of the unborn child.
Kathayan = should say.    Daivagyo = a soothsayer, one who can, or pretend to tell the future.
Vijayee = winner, victorious.     Bhavet =  become.

i.e.      When questions are asked from a soothsayer about the sex of an unborn child in the womb of a woman, he should tell the would be father that a son will be born and to the would be mother he should say that a girl will be born, and win their appreciation.

(This Subhashita deals with the human psychology about knowing the sex of the unborn child and obsession for a male child among men and suggests the safest way to a soothsayer, while facing such questions.)

वैद्यस्तर्कविहीनो   निर्लज्जा कुलवधूर्यति मूर्खः |
कटके  च  प्राहूणिको मस्तकशूलिनि   चत्वारि    ||

Vaidyastarkaviheeno nirlajja kulavadhooryati moorkhh.
Katake cha praahuniko mastakshoolini chatvaari.

Vaidyastarkaviheeno = Vadyah +tark +viheeno.    Vaidya = a physician,    Tark =  inference, guess.
Viheen = wanting, without.      Nirlajja = shameless.    Kulavadhooryati = kulavadhoo+ yati.
Kulavadhoo = a respected woman.     Yaati =  a sage .       Moorkha = stupid,foolish.
Katake = a troop       Praahunika = a stranger, an intruder.     Mastakshoolini =mastak+shoolini.
Mastak = head.    Shoolini = intense pain,     Mastakshoolini = headache.     Chatvaari = these four.

i.e.      A physician without the skill of diagnosis of ailments,  a shameless woman from a respectable family, a stupid sage, and a stranger (or intruder) in a troop,  all these four persons are really like a headache to the persons facing them.

क्वचिद्रुष्टः क्वचित्तुष्टो रुष्टस्तुष्टः क्षणे क्षणे  ।
अव्यस्थितचित्तस्य प्रसादोऽपि  भयंकरः         ॥

Kvachidtushtah kvachittushtah rushtastushtah kshane kshane.
Avyavasthitachittasya prasoodapi bhayamkarah.

Kvachidrushtah = kvachid +rushtah.      Kvachit = at times.       Rushtah = angry.
Kvachittushto =Kvachid +tushtah.  Tushtah = satisfied, pleased.  Kshane kshane  = every moment.
Avyavasthitachittasya = Avyavasthita + chittasya.      Avyasthita = unsettled, uncertain.
Chittasya = mind's      Prasaadopi =  Prasaad +api.     Prasaad = calmness, kind behaviour.
Api = even.     Bhayamkar= inducing fear,  fearful

i.e.       The mood of a person with unsettled mind wavers betwee.n anger and satisfaction every moment.  Even the calmness and kind behaviour of such a person is fearful.

सुकुले योजयेत्कन्यां पुत्रं विद्यासु योजयेत्  |
व्यसने  योजयेनञ्छत्रुमिष्टं  धर्मेण योजयेत्   ||

Sukule yojayetkanyaam putram vidyaasu yojayet.
Vyasane yojayencchatrumishtam dharmenayojayet.

Sukule = a noble family.   Yojayetkanyaam = Yojayet + Kanyaam.    Yojayet = bind in matrimony,  engage in, involve in.      Kanyaam = to daughters.     Putram = sons.     Vidyaasu= to knowledge and learning.      Vyasane = in bad habits, adversity.     Yojencchatrumishtam = Yojayet +shatru + ishtham.       Shatru = enemy.     Ishtam = voluntarily.    Dharmena = with religion, virtues.

i.e.        One should give his daughters in matrimony in a noble family and involve his sons in acquiring knowledge and learning.  He should involve his enemies in bad habits and adversity and  should voluntarily engage himself in religious and virtuous activities.

नभोभूषा पूषा कमलवनभूषा मधुकरो
वचोभूषा सत्यं वरविभवभूषा वितरणं |
मनोभूषा मैत्री मधुसमयभूषा मनिसजः 
सदोभूषा सूक्तिः सकलगुणभूषा च विनयः ||

Nabhobhooshaa pooshaa kamalvanbhooshaa madhukaro.
Vachobhooshaa satyam varavibhavabhooshaa vitaranam.
Manobhooshaa maitree madhusamayabhooshaa manasijah
Sadobhooshaa sooktih sakalagunabhooshaa cha vinayah.

Nabhobhoosha = Nabha = Bhooshaa.    Nabha = sky.     Bhooshaa =  embellishment.beautification.
Pooshaa = the Sun.    Kamalvana =  a cluster of lotuses in a lake.     Madhukaro = honey bee.
Vachobhooshaa = vacha +bhooshaa .    Vach = speaking.     Satyam = truth.
Varavibhava = Vara +vibhava.     Vara = best.    Vibhava = wealth, riches. power.
Vitarana = donation, distribution.      Manobhooshaa = Mana +bhooshaa.   Mana = mind, heart.
Maitree = friendship.     Madhusamaya= Madhu + samaya.    Madhu = the month of 'Chaitra' according to Hindu Calander, ushering the spring season.  a type of liquor.    Samay = time,period.
Manasij = cupid,the God of Love.  Sadobhushaa = Sad +bhooshaa.    Sad =an assembly of learned 
person.      Sooktih = beautiful verse or poetry, eloquent speech.    sakalguna = all virtues
vinaya = humility.

i.e.      The Sun is the embellishment of the Sky, and so are the honey bees for a cluster of lotuses in a lake.   Speech gets embellished by speaking the truth and  wealth by being given in charity. The beauty of mind and heart is in friendship, and the spring season gets embellished by amorousness 
in the environment.  An assembly of learned persons gets embellished by eloquent speech and recitation of beautiful verse or poetry, and all the virtues by humility.

(With the departure of winter season and onset of the Spring season, the environment changes dramatically and all trees and plants blossom. There is festivity every where. In ancient India this season was celebrated with festivities known as Vasantotsava or Madanotsava dedicated to Madan or Manasij (the God of Love in Hindu mythology) This has been mentioned as "Madhusamaya" in the above Subhashita.)

सा श्रीर्या न  मदं कुर्यात्स सुखी तृष्णयोज्झितः |
तन्मित्रं यस्य विश्वासः पुरुषः स जितेन्द्रियः  ||

Saa shreeya na madam kuryaatsa sukhee turshnayojjhitah.
Tanmitram yasya vishvaasah purushah sa jitendriyah.

Saa = she.    Shreerya = Shree +Yaa.   Shree = dignified and lovely, a word added to show respect.
Yaa = who.    Na = not     Madam = intoxication, drunkenness      Kuryaats = kuryaat + sa.        Kuryaat = do, indulge in.     Sa = he.      Sukhi =  happy person.
Trushnayojjhitah = Trushna +yo + jitah.      Trushna = excessive desire for any thing.   Yo = who.
Jitah = overcome, conquered.      Tanmitram = Tam+mitram.     Tam = he.      Mitram = friend .
Yasya = whose.     Vishvaash = trust, reliance.     Purushh = a person.   Jitendriya = ascetic, one who endures severe bodily hardships and has full control over his sensory organs.

i.e.      A lady, who is dignified and lovely and does not indulge in drunkenness, is respected in the society, and  a person who has conquered  'Trushna'  is the real happy person.  A real friend is one who is trustworthy,  and a real man is the one who is an ascetic i.e. he can endure all sorts of hardships and has full control  over his sensibilities.

तृणं  ब्रह्मविदः  स्वर्गस्तृणं  शूरस्य  जीवितम्  |
जिताSक्षस्य तृणं नारी निस्पृहस्य तृणं जगत् ||

Trunam brahmavidah swargastrunam shoorasya jeevitam.
Jitaakshasya trunam naari nisprahasya trunam jagat.

Trunam = a blade of grass, insignificant like a blade of grass.    Brahmavidah = a Vedic philosopher having communion with Brahman i.e Supreme God.      Swargastrunam = Swarga +trunamm.
Swarga = Heaven.      Shoorasya = a warrior's.     Jeevitam= one's life.    Jitaaksha = a person who has
full control over his senses.     Jitakshasya = a 'jitaksha' person's.     Naari = woman.
Nispraha = a person having no aspirations.     Nisprahasya - a 'nisprah' person's.    Jagat = this world.

i.e.     For a Vedic philosopher having communion with 'Brahman', a place in the Heaven is insignificant like a blade of grass,  so also his own life for a brave warrior.   For a person having full control over his senses, attraction towards women is insignificant, and for a person who has subdued his desires and has no aspirations, this world is insignificant.

जननी जन्मभूमिश्च जाह्न्वी च जनार्दनः  |
जनकः पञ्च्मश्चैव जकाराः पञ्च दुर्लभाः  ||

Jananee janmabhoomishcha jaahnavee cha jasnardanah.
Janakah panchmashchaiva jakaaraah panch durlabhaah.

Jananee = mother.    Janmabhoomishchaiva = Janmabhoomi +cha .   Janmabhoomi =motherland.   Cha = also.      Jaahnavee = sacred river Ganges (Ganga).  Janardana = God Visahnu, the seniormost among the three main Gods of Hindu religion namely Brahmaa,Vishnu and Mahesh.       Janakah = father.   Panchmashchaiva = panchamaih +cha+ iva.     Panchamaih  =  (these)five,    Iva = like.      Jakaaraah= letters beginning with the alphabet 'Ja'.       Pancha = five.
 Durlabha = rare, extraordinary.

i,e,       One's mother and father, motherland, sacred river Ganges and Supreme God Vishnu, all these five (their names starting with the letter "ja") are extraordinary and revered.

To day's Subhashita.

जामाता जठरं जाया जातवेदा जलयाशयः  |
पूरिता नैव   पूर्यन्ते जकाराः पञ्च दुर्लभाः ||

Jaamaataa hjatharam jaayaa jaataveda jalaashayah.
Pooritaa naiva pooryante jakaaraah panch durelabhaah.

Jaamaataa = son-in-law.    Jatharam = stomach.     Jaayaa = wife, woman.     Jaatvedaa = fire.
Jalaayaashaya =  a lake.   Pooritaa = on being provided or fulfilled.    Naiva = not.      Pooryante = satisfied, fulfilled.       Jakaaraah = words starting from the word 'Ja' .      Panch = five.     Durlabhah = rare, difficult to contain.

i.e.     A son-in-law,  stomach,  wife , a fire and a lake, even after being well provided ,are never satisfied or fulfilled (and always crave for more ).  All these five 'jakaars' are rare and difficult to contain.

(This subhashita has been composed in a lighter vein highlighting the tendency of a son- in law, stomach and wife never being satisified of whatever be provided to them and craving for more and more, so also is the case with fire and a lake i.e.whatever amount of wood and water we pour in a fire and lake respectively, it gets adjusted.)

पौलस्त्यः कथमन्यदारहरणे  दोषं न विज्ञातवा-
नक्षेश्चाSपि युधिष्ठरेण रमता ज्ञातो न दोषो नु किम्  |
रामेणाSपि  वने च हेमहरिणस्याSसंभवो लक्षितः
प्रत्यासन्नविपत्तिमूढमनसां  प्रायो मतिः क्षीयते    ||

Paulastyah kathamanyadaaraharane dosham na vigyaatavaa-
Naksheshchaapi yudhishtharena ramataa gyaato na dosho nu kim  |
Raamenaapi vane  cha hemaharinasyaasambhavo lakshitah.
pratyaasannavipattimoodhamanasaam praayo matih ksheeyate. ||

Paulastya = a descendant of a sage Pulastya, another name of Ravana, the Demon King of Lanka.
Kathamanyadaaraharane = Katham + anya + daar +harane.    Kathan = how ?       Anya =  other.
Daara = wife.      Harane = taking away, theft.   Dosham =offence, harmful.     Na= not.
Vigyaatvaan = knew, understood.       Akshaishchaapi = Akshaih +cha +api.    Akshaih= dices used in gambling.    Cha = also.    Api = even.   Yudhisthirena = by Udhishthira, the senior most of Pandava brothers.   Ramataa = engaged in, enjoying.    Gyaato = knew.  Nu = surely.  Kim = what.
Raamenaapi =Raamena + Api. = even Rama.   Vane = in the forest.   Hemaharinasyaasambhavo =
Hema +Harinasya +asambhavo.     Hema = gold.     Harinasy = deer's.    Asambhavo = impossible.
Lakshitah = known.    Pratyaasannavipattimoodhamanasaam = Pratyaasanna +vipatti + moodha +
manasaam.      Pratyaasanna = imminent.   Vipatti = calamity.     Moodha = perplexed, gone astray.
Manasaam = persons.     Praayo = perhaps, almost.     Mati = intuition, judgement, intelligence.   Ksheeyate =deminishes, decays.    Vipattimoodha = a person confused by an imminent calamity.

i.e.         Did not Ravana, the descendant of the sage Pulastya, know that to forcefully take away the wife of a person is a serious offence,  or did not Yudhishthira know that engaging in gambling in a game of dices is harmful , and even did  Lord Rama not know that existence of a golden deer in a forest is impossible ?  They all knew this but perhaps some times the intuition and judgement of persons diminishes , when they are perplexed by an imminent calamity.

(  Through this Subhashita the author has highlighted the fact that while facing imminent danger or calamity,what to say of ordinary persons even renowned  persons tend to lose their intuition and judgement on the face of imminent calamity and has cited three instances from the tales of Ramayana and Mahabharata of Hindu mythology.)

वरं  मौनं  कार्यं  न  च वचनमुक्तं  यदनृतं
 वरं क्लैव्यं पुंसां न च परकलत्राSभिगमनम्         |
वरं प्राणात्यागो न च पिषुनवाक्यैष्वभिरुचि -
वरं भिक्षाSSशित्वं न च परधनाSSस्वादनसुखम्   ||

Varam maunam kaaryam na cha vachanamuktam yadanrutam
Varam klaivyam pumsaam na cha parakalatraabhigamanam.
Varam praanatyaago na cha pishunavaakyaishwabhiruchi -
Vaream bhikshaashitvam na cha paradhanaaswaadanasukham.

Varam = better, preferable.    Maunam = silence      Kaaryam = doing work.     Na = not.    
Cha = also.    Vachanmuktam = vachan + muktam.      Vachan = promise.     Muktam = free, immune.
Yadanrutam = yat +anrutam.        Yat =  rather than .       Anrutam = lying, untruthful.
Klaivya = impotent, neither masculine nor feminine.      Parakalatraabhigamanam = par + kalatra +abhigamanam.       Par = others'      Kalatra = wife.    Abhigamana = having sexual  relations.
Praanatyago = Praan + tyago.     Praana = breath of life.   Tyaago = sacrifice.   Praanatyaago = sacrificing one's life.       Pishunavaakyeshwabhiruchi = Pishuna + vaakyeshu + abhiruchi.     Pishuna = wicked person.
Vaakyeshu = sayings.      Abhiruchi = interest, liking.      Bhikshaashitvam = make a living by begging.
Paradhanaaswadanasukham = paradhan + aasvaadana + sukham.    Paradhana =  another's wealth.
Aasvaadan = enjoying, tasting.     Sukham = pleasure, happiness.

i.e.        It is better to do work silently  rather than  break a promise and be called untruthful .  It is better to be  impotent  or a person of neuter gender rather than having sexual relations with other person's wife.
One should prefer to sacrifice his life  rather than having a liking or belief in the utterances of wicked persons, and better make a living by begging than grabbing and enjoying other peoples' wealth.

वार्ता च कौतुकवती विमला च विद्या
लोकोत्तरः परिमलश्च कुरङ्गनाभे     |
तैलस्य विन्दुरिव वारिणि दुर्निवार-
मेतश्चयं   प्रसरति स्वयमेव लोके      ||

Vaartaa cha kautakvati vimala cha vidya
Lokottarah parimalashcha kuranganaabhe
tailasya vinduriva vaarini durnivaara-
metashchayam prasarati swayameva loke.

Vaartaa = news.    cha = also.    Kautakavati  = interesting.      Vimala = impeccable, faultless.
Vidya = learning, incantation, words spoken or sung.     Lokottarah = exceptional, uncommon.
Parimalashcha =  fragrance of    Kuranganaabhe = kuranga + naabhe.    Kurang = a deer.
Naabhe = musk, naval cavity..    Kurangnaabhe = a musk deer's  (In the higher altitudes of Himalayas a specie of deer is found.  Naval gland of these deer contains a substance which has a very strong fragrance.The deer is hunted to get this gland for manufacturing various perfumes. Due to poaching this specie is now considered as endangered specie and its hunting is banned.)
Tailasya = oil's    Binduriva = bindu + iva.      Bindu = drop.     Iva = like.     Vaarini = water.
Durnivaar = irrepressible, difficult to be kept back or suppressed.      Metashchayam  = Etad + chaym.     Etad = this.   Chayam = multitude, state of being many.  Etashchayam =  all these .    Prasarati = spreads.
Swayameva = itself  (without any special effort).     Loke = in ordinary life,  among people.

i.e.     An interesting News,  an impeccable and exceptional speech  (or song), and the fragrance of
the naval gland of a musk deer, spreads  far and wide without any special effort and can not be suppressed,  just like drops of oil falling on a water surface spread themselves. .

शील  भारवती  कान्ता पुष्पभारवती  लता |
अर्थभारवती  वाणी भजते कामपि श्रियम्  ||

Sheel bhaaravati kaantaa pushpabhaaravati lataa.
Arthabhaaravati vaani bhajate kaamapi shriyam.

Sheel = moral conduct, character.     Bhaarvatee = laden with,  having      Kaantaa = a lovely woman.
Pushpabhaarvatee =  pushpa + bhaarvatee.     Pushpa = flower.    Lataa =  a vine, a creeper plant.
Arthbhaarvatee = arth + bhaarvati.       Arth =meaning, purpose.    Vaani = eloquent speech.
Bhajate = rever.      Kaamap = Kaam +api.      Kaam = expectation.    Api = also even.   Shriyam = grace.

i.e.    A lovely woman having excellent moral conduct , a vine laden with flowers, and a meaningful and eloquent speech by an orator, all these are  revered  if these are beyond expectation.

वरं  शून्या शाला न च खलु वरो दुष्ट वृषभो |      वरं  वेश्या पत्नी न पुनरविनीता कुलवधूः   ||
वरं  वासोSरण्ये न पुनरविवेकाSधिपपुरे.    |      वरं प्राणत्यागो न पुनरधमानामामुपगमः      ||

Varam shoonyaa shaalaa na cha khalu varo dushta vrushabho,  
Varam veshyaa patnee na punaravineetaa kulavadhooh.
Varam vaasoranye naz punarvivekaadhipapure.
Varam praanatyaago na punaradhamaanaamupagataa.

Varam =  better,preferable.   Shoonyaa = barren, empty.   Shaalaa = cow-shed.     Na = not.     Cha = also.
Khalu = truly. rather than.     Varo = better.       Dushta = wicked, offensive.     Brushabho =  bull.
Veshyaa = a women of ill repute,  prostitute.      Patnee =  wife.     Punaravineetaa = Punah + avineetaa.
Punah = again.      Avineetaa = immodest, shameless.      Kulavadhoo = daughter-in-law.
Vaasoranye = Vaas + aranye.      Vaas = dwelling, abode.      Aranye =  a forest.
Napunaravivekaadhipapure =  Na +punah + aviveka +adhipa +pure.       Avivekee = imprudent.
Adhip = ruler.    Pure = city.        Praanatyaaga =  death.      Punaradhamaamupagamah = punah+ adhamaanaanm + upagamah.       Adhamaanaam = vilest persons.    Upagamo = association, society,

i.e.       It is better to keep the cow shed empty rather than keep a wicked and offensive bull.    It is also preferable to have a woman of ill repute as a wife  rather than have an immodest and shameless daughter-in-law.  Similarly,it is  better to live in a forest but not in a city ruled by an imprudent ruler, and it is better to face death rather than keep the company of vilest of persons.

(As regards association with vilest persons, there is a couplet by Goswami Tulsidas, the author of Ramayana - "बरु भल वास नरक कर ताता  दुष्ट संग  जनि देइ विधाता " (Baru bhal vaas narak kar taataa dushta sang jani deya vidhaataa) i.e. It is preferable to live in Hell rather with a vile person in Heaven)

धर्मं  प्रसङ्गादपि  नाSचरन्ति  पापं  प्रयत्नेन समाचरन्ति  |
आश्चर्यमेतद्धि मनुष्यलोकेSमृतं परित्याज्य विषं पिवन्ति ||

Dharmam prasangaadapi naacharanti papam prayatnena samaacharanti.
Aascharymetaddhi manushyalokemrutam parityaajya visham pivanti..

Dharmam = religious tenets,righteousness.    Prasangaadapi = prasangaad +api.     Api = even
Prasanggad = occasion.      Naacharanti = na +aacharanti.     Na = not.     Acharanti = act upon, follow.
Paapam = sinful acts.       Prayatnena =deliberately, intentionally.      Samaacharanti = perform thoroughly.
Aascharyametaddhi = aascharya +etad +hi.      Ascharya = surprise.    Etad= this     Hi = surely.
Manushyaslokeymrutam      Manushyaloke + amrutam.      Manushyaloke = in this world.
Amrutam = According to a legend 'Amruta' a nectar was produced from ocean by the joint efforts of Gods and Demons.  This nectar has the power to make a person immortal if he drinks it.
Parityaajya = to give up or renounce, discard.       Visham = poison.     Pivanti = drink.

i.e.       People do not follow the tenets of Religion even on religious occasions where they are supposed to do so and deliberately indulge in sinful deeds.   It is really surprising that in this world people discard the 'Amrita' and deliberately choose poison instead.

(In this subhashita the author has compared  virtuous deeds according to the tenets of religion to "Amruta" and sinful deeds to a poison, and expresses surprise at the tendency of people deliberately and knowingly choosing the path leading to sins.)

Streenaam = women.  Youvanamarthinaam  =  Youvan +arthinaam +anugamo.    Youvan = youth.     Arthinaam = industrious persons.  Anugamo=  servants.    Raagyaam = Kings, princes.
Prataph =  majesty, power.    Sataam = noble and righteous persons.    Swasthyam = good health.
swalpadhanasya = a person having very little wealth.   Samhatrashruttshw=samhati+rasa+hrutteshcha.
Samhati = frugality .       Rasa = sentiment.      Hrutteshcha = a crooked and wicked person's.
Vaagdambarh = pompous and boastful language.     Swaacharasya =  to a person of good conduct.
Sadarchanam = worship of deities and respect to superiors.   Parinatirvidyaakulasyekataa = Parinataih +
Vidyaa +kulasya + ekataa.    Parinataih = honourable and mature persons.  Vidya =learning, knowledge.
Kulasya = family's.     Ekataa = unity.     Pragyaayaa =  Teachers, pandits.   Dhanamunnatrnatitatih =
Dhan + unnati  +natitati.      Dhan = wealth, money.    Unnati = increase,development.
Natitati =excessive humbleness..    Shabtairviveko = Shaantia +viveko.    Shantyai = persons having a cool mind.     Viveko = wisdom, right judgement.       Balam =  power,strength., vigour.

i.e.         The power of women is in their youth., that of industrious persons in their servants, and that of kings in their majesty.  Noble and righteous persons' strength is in their good health and the strength of  a person  having very little wealth lies in his frugal habits.A crooked and wicked person's power is his pompous and boastful language, and a religious and simple person's strength lies is in worship of deities and respect to his superiors.  The strength of honorable persons is their Knowledge and learning ,and that of a family or a clan is in the unity among its members.  Lastly the power of  teachers is in their humbleness and ever increasing knowledge (which is their true wealth), and a sober person's strength is wisdom and ability to take correct decisions.

स्त्रीणां हि साहचर्याद्भवन्ति चेतांसि भर्तृसदृशानि   |
मधुरापि हि मूर्छयते  विषविटपिसमाश्रिता वल्ली  ||

Streenaam hi saahacharyaadbhavanti chetamsi bhrtrusadrushaani.
Madhuraapi hi moorchayete vishavitapasamaashritaa vallee .

Streenaam = women.     Hi = surely.     Saahacharyaadbhavanti =Saahacharyaat + bhavanti.
Saahacharyaat = living together, in the company of.     Bhavanti = become.   Bhartrushadrashaani =bhartru +
shadrashaani.      Bhartru = husband, lord.      Sadrushaani  = like.    Chetaansi = mentallty, intelligence.
Madhuraapi = madhur + api.     Madhur = pleasant, charming, lovely.      Api = even.      Moorchayate =   gets excited, benumbs.   Vishvitapisamaashritaa =   Visha +vitap +samaashritaa.     Visha = poison.  Vitap = tree.       Samaashritaa = leaning on,       Vallee = a creeping plant.

i.e.       Women, who may otherwise be charming and pleasant in nature, while living together with their husbands acquire the mentality of their tough husbands and get excited and become rude, just like a creeper plant leaning on a poisonous tree also becomes poisonous.

विस्मयः सर्वथा हेयः प्रत्यूहः सर्वकर्मणाम्  |
तस्माद्विस्मयमुत्सृज्य  साध्यसिदधिर्विधीयताम्  ||

Vismayah sarvathaabheyah pratyuhh sarvakarmanaam'
Tasmaadvismayamutsrujya saadhyasiddhirvidheeyataam.

Vismay =wonder, perplexity, indecision.     Sarvathaa = altogether.       Heyah =to be abandoned, shunned.
Pratyuhah = impedement, obstacle.           Sarva = every.         Karmanaam = actions, works.
Tasmadvismayamusrujya = Tasmat +vismay+utsrujya.    Tasmat = therefore.    Utsrujya = to be abandoned.
Saadhya = any work to be accomplished or desire fulfilled.      Siddhi = end result, solution of a problem.
Vidheeyataam = achie.

i.e.         Perplexity and  indecision should altogether be shunned, as it causes impediment in the performance of every action or work.   Therefore, one should abandon perplexity and indecision and take appropriate action to accomplish the task in hand .

To day's Subhashita.

कार्पण्येन यशः क्रुधा गुणचयो दम्भेन  सत्यं क्षुधा
मर्यादा व्यसनैर्धनं च विपदा स्थैर्यं प्रमादेर्द्विजः   |
पैशुन्येन कुलं मदेन विनयो दुश्चेष्टया पौरुषं
दारिद्र्येण जनाSSदरो ममतया चात्मप्रकाशो हतः ||

Kaarpanyen yashh krudhaa gunachayo dambhen satyam kshudhaa.
Maryaadaa vyasaniardhanam cha vipadaa sthairyam pramaaderdvijahh,
Paishunyen kulam madena vinayo dushchestayaa paurusham.
Daaridryena janaadaro mamatayaa chaatmaprakasho hatah.

Kaarpanyena = poverty,parsimony, indigence.      Yashh = fame.       Krudhaa =  anger.
Gunachayo = various qualities and virtues.      Dambhen =hypocrisy.    Satyam= truth.
Kshudhaa = hunger.       Maryaadaa= propriety, standard of behaviour and morals accepted in society as correct.       Vyasanairdhanam = Vyasanai +dhana    m.     Vyasanai =addictions.    Dhanam = wealth, money.  Cha =and.    Vipadaa =misfortune, calamity.    Sthairyam =stability, firmness.   Pramaaderdwijahh =
Pramaade +dwijahh.       Pramade =by carelessness or negligence, by intoxication.    Dvijah = twice born,
(According to Hindu Religion's caste system the society is divided into four main castes namely Brahmin, Kshtriya, Vaishya and Shoodra.  The first three castes are considered twice born classes i.e. after a  religious ceremony known as 'yagyopavita' they are considered as twice born.  Brahmins are considered to be most revered among all the castes, as they are considers as teachers having divine knowledge and provide guidance to the society on all matters )
Paishunya = wickedness.      Kulam = lineage of a family in a society.       Maden =-pride, insolence.
Vinayo = humility, propriety of conduct.       Dushchestayaa = by improper behaviour or action.
Paurush = manliness.     Daaridryena = indigence, penury.     Janaadar = jana + aadar.    Jana = persons.
Aadar = respect, regard.   Mamatayaa= self interest, too much attachment to a person or thing.  Chaatmaprakasho = Cha+ aatmaprakasho.     Cha = also.    Aatmaprakash = self enlightenement.
Hatah = destroyed, gone.

i.e.       If a person  is very poor he loses his fame.  If he always remains angry his virtues and qualities are destroyed.  If he is a hypocrite he will no longer be truthful,and hunger in him results in loss of propriety in society. He will lose his  wealth if he has any type of addiction and also his  firmness if he faces any calamity.
A respected Brahmin priest or a preacher loses all his respect if he is negligent and indulges in any type of intoxication. .If  a person is wicked he loses the status of his family in society. Pride and insolence results in loss of humility and propriety of conduct in a person, and improper behaviour results in loss of manliness..  Poverty results in loss of respect in the society and self interest and too much attachment for any thing by a person destroys  all his self -enlightenment.

(This subhashita lists all the pitfalls that a person faces during his life time and expects that these should be avoided.  As regards hunger there is another  saying - '( वुभुक्षितम्  किं न करोति पापं '  (vubhukshitam kim na karoti paapam) i.e. a hungry person does not hesitate to do any sinful act.  Hunger can be for any thing besides food.)

Vishwaamitra Paraashar prabhratayo vaatambupoornaashanaa.
stepi streemukhapankajam sulalitam drushtwewa moham gataah.
Shaalyannam saghrutam payodadhi yutam bhunjanti ye maanavaa-
steshaamindriyanigraho yadi bhavedvindhyastaresaagare..

Vishwaamitra,  Paraashar = names of renowned Sages.    Prabhratayo = and other sages following them.
Vaataambuparnaashanaa = Vaat+Ambu+parna+ashanaa.    Vaat= air, wind.   Ambu = water.   Parna = leaves of trees and other vegetation.  Aasan = subsisting on.     Stepi = Te + api.    Te = they.   Api =even.
Streemukhpankajam = Stree+mukh+pankajam.    Stree = woman .  Mukh = face.   Pankajam + lotus.
i.e. face of a woman beautiful like a lotus flower.     Sulalita = charming.     Drushtwewa = after seeing.
Moham = confusion, infatuation.   Gata = became.     Shaalyannam =shaali+annam.     Shaali = rice.
Annam = food.    Shaalyannam = cooked rice.    Saghrutam = with ghee (butter oil).  Payodadhiyutam = paya +dadhi+yutam.     Paya = milk.    Dadhi = curd.    Yutam = along with.    Bhunjanti = enjoying a meal.
Ye =those     Maanavaa = persons.   Teshaamindriyanigraho =Teshaam+ indriyanigraho.  Teshaam = they.
Indriyanigraho = subduing of passion, chastity.   Yadi = if.   Bhavedvindhyastaresaagare = bhavet+Vindhya+
tare+ saagare.     Bhavert = happens.    Vindhya = the name of a Mountain.    Tare = swim, float.
Saagare = an ocean.

i.e.        Renowned sages like Vishwaamitra, Paraashar and many other sages, who subsisted on air, water and leaves of vegetation in their pursuit of  chastity and salvation, when they too suffered with infatuation and confusion on seeing a woman's charming and beautiful face like a lotus flower , then those persons who always enjoy sumptuous meals of cooked rice along with ghee, milk and curd , if they are able to control and subdue their passion, it is just like the Vindhya mountain floating and swimming in the ocean

अप्रतिबुद्धे   श्रोतरि   वक्तुर्वाक्य  प्रयाति  वैफल्यम्   |
नयनविहीने भर्तरि लावण्यमिवेह  खञ्जनाक्षीणाम्   ||

Apratibuddhe shrotari vakturvaakya prayaati vaikalyam.
nayanviheene bhartari laavanyamiveha khanjanaaksheenaam.

Apratibuddha = a foolish person.      Shrotari =  listeners.     Vakturvaakya = vaktu +vakya.
Vaktu = spoken     Vaakya = words, saying.      Prayaati = causes, results in     Vaiphalyam = futile, without any fruitful result..   Nayanviheen = nayan+ viheen.       Nayan= eyes,         Viheen = without.    Nayanviheena = a blind person.      Bhartari = husband.     Lavanyamiveha = lavanya + iva +Iha.     Lavanya = beauty, charm.       Iva - like.     Iha =that.      Khanjanaaksheenaam = Khanjan + akshaeenaam . Khanjan = a wagtail bird known for its beautiful eyes.       Aaksh = eyes.
Khanjanaaksheenaam = a beautiful woman having beautiful eyes like the bird called 'khanjan' .

i.e.       Addressing  foolish listeners  sagaciously is a futile exercise and does not produce any fruitful result, just like a blind husband of a beautiful woman with sparkling eyes ( like a 'khanjan' bird ) is unable to appreciate her beauty,   

(There is a proverb in Hindi echoing this sentiment in a rather crude way as - ' भैस के आगे बीन बजाय भैस खडी पगुराय' - 'Bhains ke aage been bajaya bhains khadee pagurai'  i.e. playing a flute before a Buffalo does not charm it and it continues groaning.

'हिमालय दिवस 'के उपलक्ष्य मे उत्तराखण्ड् की त्रासदी मे दिवङ्गत हुए व्यक्तियों के प्रति श्रद्धा सुमन अर्पित |

          आज 'हिमालय दिवस' के उपलक्ष्य मे हिन्दी के मूर्धन्य कवि और छायावाद के प्रवर्तक महान्  कवि और विचारक स्वर्गीय सच्चिदानन्द हीरानन्द वात्स्यायन 'अज्ञेय'  की इस कालजयी कविता को आप की सेवा मे पुनः प्रस्तुत करता हूं |   'अज्ञेय' जी को हिमालय तथा विशेषतः उत्तराखण्ड् की भूमि से बेहद लगाव था | उनकी अधिकांश कविताओं का यहीं सृजन हुआ था   इस कविता मे  मानव द्वारा प्रकृति के विनाश की पीडा को व्यक्त करते हुए कवि ने जो भविष्यवाणी करीब् ५० वर्ष पूर्व की थी वह् सत्य साबित हुई, क्यों कि कवि एक भविष्यवक्ता भी होता है और उसे नजरन्दाज करना कितना महंगा हमें पडा  वह् अब सबके सामने है |

                             नन्दा / बीस तीस पचास वर्षों में
                             तुम्हारी वन-राजियों की लुगदी बना कर
                             हम  उस पर/ अखबार छाप चुके होंगे
                             तुम्हारे संन्नाटे  को चींथ रहे होंगे
                             हमारे धुंधुवाते शक्तिमान ट्रक
                             तुम्हारे झरने -सोते सॊख् चुके होंगे
                             और तुम्हारी नदियां
                             ला सकेंगी केवल शस्य भक्षी बाढें
                             या आंतों  को उमेठने वाली बीमारियां
                              तुम्हारा आकाश हो चुका होगा
                              हमारे अतिस्वन विमानों के
                             धूम सूत्रों के गुंझर  | ........
                              नन्दा !  जल्दी ही /बीस-तीस -पचास वर्षों में
                              हम  तुम्हारे नीचे एक मरु बिछा चुके होंगे
                              और तुम्हारे उस नदी-धौत सीढी वाले मंदिर में
                              जला करेग एक मरु दीप. |

     आज उत्तराखण्ड की जो दुर्दशा विकास  के नाम पर पर्यावरण  से खिलवाड करने से हुई है उसका वीभत्स चित्रण  उपर्युक्त कविता में 50 वर्ष पूर्व ही कवि ने  कर दिया था |पर हमारे नीति नियन्ताओं द्वारा उसकी अनदेखी का परिणाम हम  भुगतने को अभिशापित  हैं |  भविष्य में भी हम चेतेंगे इस में भी शक है.|
      इस त्रासदी में मारे गये हजारों व्यक्तियों को हमारी सच्ची श्रद्धाञ्जलि  यही होगी कि भविष्य  में पर्यावरण  की सुरक्षा का हम  वचन लें और निष्ठा पूर्वक उसका पालन करें |

व्यालाश्रितोपि विफलोSपि सकण्टकोSपि
वक्रोSपि  पङ्क्जनितोSपि  दुरासदोSपि   |
गन्धेन बन्धुरसि केतक पुष्पजनेन
ह्येको गुणः खलु निहन्ति समस्त दोषान् ||

Vyaalaashritopi viphalopi sakantakopi.
Vkropi pankajanitopi duraaadopi.
Gandhen bandhurasi ketak pushpajanena.
Heko gunahh khalu nihanti samast doshaan.

Vyaalaashritopi = Vyaal + aashrit=api.   Vyaal = snake.  aashrita= inhabited by. Api =even, although.
Viphal = not able to bear any fruits.    Sakantakopi =Sakantaka+api .     Sakantak = having thorns.
Vakropi = Vakra+api      Vakra = curved and bent.     Pankajanitopi =Pankjanita+ api.  
 Pankjanita  = growing in mud.     Duraasadopi = Duraasada +api;    Duraasada =difficult to get.
Gandhen = by its smell.     Bandhurasi = is pleasant.       Ketak = a thorny and curved plant which
produces very sweet smelling flowers    Pushpajanena = produced by the flower.     Hyeka = hi+eko.
Hi =because of.      Eko = one.     Gunah =quality, virtue.     Khalu = truly,  indeed.
Nihanti = destroy.      Samasta = all.       Doshaah = defects, shortcomings.

i.e.            Although the 'ketak' plant is inhibited by snakes , does not produce any fruits, is full of thorns, is curved and bent, grows on muddy ground and is difficult to approach,  it is still liked due to the very sweet smell produced by its flowers.  Indeed, even one quality or virtue destroys all other shortcomings in a person or a thing.

(On the lines of the above Subhashita there is a proverb in Hindi -  दुधारू गाय की लात भी भली- (Dudhaaru gaaya kee laat bhee bhalee) i.e. A lactating cow is still tolerated even if kicks the person milking, because it gives milk.)

अलभ्यं लभ्धुकामस्य जनस्य गतिरीदृशी  |
अलभ्येषु मनस्तापः संचितार्थो विनश्यति. ||

Alabhyam labhdhukaamasya janasya gatireedrushee.
Alabhyeshu manastapah samchirtaartho vinashyati.

Alabhyam = unavailable.   Lubdhakaamasya = Lubdh + kaamasya.      Lubbdh = profit, gains.
Kamasya = desirer.      Janasya = persons'      Gati = movement, end result.   Edrishi = similar
Alabhyeshu =those who are deprived of some thing.    Manastapah = mental anguish.
Sanchitaartho = Sanchit + artho.     Sanchita = accumulated.     Artho - wealth.     Vinashyati - destroyed.

i.e.     The end result of persons who are deprived of wealth and those who desire wealth and get it , is the same. Those who do not get it suffer from mental anguish and those who have accumulated wealth ultimately lose it..

अहो दुर्जनसंसर्गान्मानहानिः  पदे पदे  |
पावको लोहसंगेन मुद्गरैरभिहन्यते ||

Aho durjansamsargaanmaanahaanih pade pade.
Paavako lihasamgena mudgarairabhihanyate.

Aho =  Oh !  (an expression of surprise).     Durjansamsargaanmaanahaanih = Durgan + samsargad + maan +haani.        Durjan = wicked person      Samsarga = in association with.       Maan = respect, honour.
Hani = loss.     Pade   pade = at every step.      Paavako =  fire.   Lohasamgena = loha + sangena.
Loha = iron.     Samgena = in the company of.      Mudgarairabhihanyate = Mudgaraih+abhihanyate.
Mudgarai - hammers.       Abhihanyate = struck, hit.

i.e.      Oh !   by associating with wicked people, one has to face loss of respect and honor at every step, as is the case with iron in the company of fire being repeatedly hit by a hammer.

(In this Subhashita the author has used the simile of a piece of iron being heated inside a furnace and afterwards beaten with a hammer to give it the desired shape. Similarly association with wicked people lands a person into trouble again and again.)

To day's Subhashita.

अविवेकिनि भूपाले नश्यन्ति गुणिनां गुणाः |
हावभावाः पुरन्द्रीणां   भर्तरीव   नपुंसके      ||

Avivekini bhoopaale nashyanti guninaam gunaah.
Haavabhaavaah purandreenaam bhartareeva napumsake.

Avivekini = a person who is imprudent and unable to take proper decisions.
Bhoopaale = Ruler of a country, King.       Nashyanti = perish, disappear.
Guninaam = virtuous persons.      Gunaah = moral values, virtues.      Haavabhaavaah = gestures.
Purandhreenaam = of women.      Bhartareeva =bhartru +iva.    Bhartru = husband, lord, master.

i.e.     If a ruler of a country is imprudent and unable to judge what is good or bad for his country,all virtuous and noble persons also tend  lose their virtues and moral values. In spite of his being the King or a Prime Minister of the  Country, his gestures are like that of  a woman and he is a coward like an eunuch.

(This Subhashita warns about the harm that is done to a country headed by a weak King or Prime Minister, in no uncertain terms.  That is why it is also said  - राजा कालस्य कारणम्  (Raaja kaalasya kaaranam) or - यथा राजा तथा प्रजा (Yathaa raajaa tatha praja)  i,e, (i) the events in a country are determined by the way it is ruled by the King and (ii) the actions and behavior of the subjects are dependent on the actions of the rulers.  All over the world in many countries we see the truth behind the above Subhashita.)

यथा  चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्ष्यते निघर्षच्छेदनतापताडनैः  |
तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुषः परीक्ष्यते श्रुतेन शीलेन कुलेन कर्मणा  ||

Yathaa chaturbhib kanakam pareekshyate nigharncchedanataaptaadane.
Tathaa chaturbhib purushh pareekshyate shruten sheelen kulen karmanaa.

Yatha = for instance, for example.    Chaturbhih =  four (ways) .    Kanakam = Gold.
Pareekshyate = judged,examined.   Nigharshccedanataapataadanai=Nigharsh+chedan+taap+taadan. Nigharsh= the process of rubbing.     Chedan =splitting, piercing       Taap = heating.         Taadanai = by striking, hitting.     Tathaa = in the same manner, similarly.      Purushh = persons.    Shruten = by following the tenets of Vedas and other scriptures.     Sheelen = virtues.      Kulen = by lineage of a noble family.   Karmanaa = by performance, by the good deeds.

i.e.    For instance,  purity of Gold is examined in four ways, namely by rubbing it on a touch-stone, by splitting and piercing it, by heating it on fire and by beating it with a hammer.   In the same manner a person is also judged in four ways, namely by his knowledge and observance of the tenets of Vedas and scriptures, by his virtues, by his noble lineage and by the good deeds performed by him.

भूमिपतावर्थपतौ  बाले वृद्धे तपोनिधौ विदुषि  |
योषिति मूर्खे गुरुषु च विदुषा नैवोत्तरं देयम्   ||

Bhoomipataavarthapatau  baale vruddhe taponidhau vidushi.
Yoshiti moorkhe gurushu cha vidushaa naivotaram deyam.

Bhoomipataavarthapatam = bhoomipati + arthapatau.     Bhoomipati = King, land lord.    
Arthpati = rich person.     Bale = children.      Vruddhe = aged persons.    Taponidhau =   eminently pious persons.      Vidushi  yoshiti = a  learned and wise woman.      Moorkhe = foolish persons.  
Gurushu = teachers.cha = also     Vidushaa = wise and learned.     Naivottaram naiva +uttaram.
Naiva =not, never.       Uttaram =  answers.  ( here the intention of the author is that one should  not to enter into an argument by putting a counter question to an answer.
a question..       Deyam = given.

i.e.          One should never engage in an argument with a king or land lord, children, aged persons,  eminently pious persons, a learned lady, foolish persons and learned persons.

हरिं हरीतकीं चैव गायत्री च दिने दिने |
मोक्षाSSरोग्यतपः कामाश्चिन्तयेद्भक्षयेज्जपेत् ||

Harim hareetakeem chaiva gaayatrri cha dine dine.
Mokshaarogyatapah kaamaashchintayedbhakshayejjapet.

Hari = another name of God Vishnu.     Hareetaki = name of a tree (botanical name Terminalia Chebula)
called 'हरड्'  (harad) in local language, which has medicinal property and its powdered seeds(fruits) are used for curing many ailments relating to ttomach and digestion in Ayurveda.       Chaiva = as also.
Gayatree =  A sacred 'Mantra' (Vedic hymn) recited as a prayer.      Dine Dine = every day.
Mokshaarogyatapah = Moksha + Aarogya +Tapah.     Moksha = emancipation and release from re-birth.
Aarogya = good health, freedom from diseases..      Tapah = religious austerity.
Kaamaashchintayedbhakshay +Kaama +chintayed +bhakshayed + japet.       Kaama = wish, desire.
Chintayed = think, contemplate.       Bhakshayet = consume, eat or drink.     Japet = repeat a 'mantra'
mentally or in a low voice, some times using a rosery (a string of beads used for saying prayers).

i.e.       With a view to attaining 'Moksha', freedom from diseases and religious austerity, one should  every day remember the name of Lord Vishnu,  eat Hareetaaki powder  and do 'Japa' of Gayatri Mantra respectively.

(Through this Subhashita the author has given advice for spiritual, physical and moral upliftment of people in their daily life in a most simple way.)

To day's Subhashita.

यान्ति न्याय प्रवृत्तस्य तिर्यञ्चोSपि सहायताम्   |
अपन्थानं  तु  गच्छन्तं  सोदरोSपि   विमुन्चते      ||

Yaanti nyaaya pravruttasya tiryanchopi sahaayataam.
Apanthaanam tu gacchantam sodoropi vimunchate.

Yaanti= achiecve, get,    Nyaaya = justice.     Pravruttasya = a practitioner's    Tiryanchopi = tiryanch+api.
Tiryanch = animals, beasts.    Api = even.     Sahaayataam = helpful,     Apanthaanam = A+panthaanam.
'A' = a prefix of Sanskrit language like 'un' and 'in' in English, which gives just the oppoistive meaning of a word .     Panthaanm =path. road.     Tu =but.      Gacchantu = going, following.     Sodoropi = sodar+api.
Sodar = co-uterine,  real brother or sister.     Vimunchate =  abandon, leave.

i.e.       To a person following the path of justice and righteousness, even the beasts and animals are helpful . But if he follows the path of injustice and treachery even his own brother abandons him.
