(There are numerous stories of people being ruined by falling in a debt trap.Even prosperous countries and rich people meet the same fate. The dirty tricks and stern measures adopted by money lenders to recover the loans given by them are also feared by the debtors and they avoid to face the money lenders by hook or crook.  This subhashit outlines this phenomenon in a nice way.)

Vasham = subject to, under control.   Tat = that.    Katham = reporting, telling.

i.e.     Scholars who belive in the concept of rebirth and 'Karma', attribute the wealth a person has during his lifetime, to the good deeds done by him in his previous birth, but if a person acquires  wealth after a long time through his entrepreneurship and hard work (Udyam), then they do not say that it is  due to the bebevolence of Destiny.

(I feel that the above translation of the Subhashit under the caption "Udyog Prasamshaa" done by me does not incorporate fully the philosophy behind the Shloka. I will feel obliged if a more detailed and better interprettion of the Subbhashit is done by the erudite members of our Group.)

Na yatna kotishatakairapi dushtah sudheerbhavati.
kim marditopi kastooryaam sashuno yaati kaurabha.

Na = not. =      Yatna = efforts.   koti = 10 million.    Shatakairapi = shatakai +api,
Shatakai = one hundred.      Api = even (to emphasise)    Dushtah = a wicked person.
Suheerbhavati =  Sudhi + bhavati.     Sudhi = a noble and righteous person.     Bhavati = becomes.
Kim = can        Marditopi = mardit + api.    Mardit = rubbed.     Kastooryaam =  Musk, a serection
from the gland inside a musk deer's stomach, which has got a very sweet smell.   Such deers are found in upper reaches of Himalayas and are poached just to get the 'Kastoori'  i.e. musk.
Lashuna =garlic, known for hit pungent smell.      Yaati = acquires.        Saurabham = sweet smell,fragrance.

i.e.      Even by making millions of attempts a wicked person does not become a noble and righteous person, just like a bulb of garlik even rubbed with 'kastoori' does not become sweet smelling.

i.e.     Unforeseen wealth even appearing before one's eyes is not bestowed upon him personally by the Destiny, but he is expected  to make strenuous efforts to acquire it.

To day's Subhashit.

दैवं पुरुषकारेण  साध्यसिद्धिनिबन्धनम्  |
योSतिक्रामितुमिच्छेत्स  न लोकेश्ववसीदति   ||

Daivam purushkaarena saadhyasiddhi nibandhanam.
Yotikraamitumicchetsa na lokeshwavaseedati.

Daivam = destiny, fate,     Purushkaar =  human effort,  manly action.
Purushkaaren = by manly action or effort.     Saadhyasiddhinibandhanam = Saadhya + siddhi+ nibandhanam ,      Saadhya = attainable goal.     Siddhi =solution of a problem, achievement of the goal.   Nibandhanam = act of binding together, linking up.       Yotikraamitumicchetsa = Yah+
atikramitu+ icchet +sa.     Yah = whosoever.        Atikramitu = violating, overstepping.
 Icchet = wishes,desires. Sa = he.    Na = not.     Lokeshvavaseedati = Lokeshu + avaseedati.     Lokeshu = in this world/    Avaseedati =gets depressed,  perishes.

i.e.        For a successful achievement of  the desired objective, a bonding of manly action with  luck is essential.    Whosoever wishes to overstep this winning combination, becomes unsuccessful in his efforts and gets depressed.

(It is one of the characteristics of Sanskrit Subhashitas, that it is both one sided and exhaustive - one sided when viewed only in parts, and exhaustive when viewed as a whole. I have posted many subhashits in the past extolling the efforts and denegrating the 'Daiva'.  But here is a subhashit which says that both luck (daiva) and entrepreneurship (Purushkaar) must bond together for the success of a venture. In this context see the subhashit posted by me on 24th June and 6th July.)

Who is responsible for thr tragedy of Uttarakahand ?

     Now a days a debate is hotting up in newspapers and TV on the above subject.  and many thought provoking articles have appeared in the news papers.  One article by Smt. Smruti Koppikar published in Hindustan Times dt.3rd July, 2013  titled "Clearance Mela .Experts raise questions over Government panel going too easy on hydel projects -
-.POWER THAT RUINE UTTARAKHAND"   is a real eye opener.  It states that in utter disregard to the warnings by eminent scientists, engineers, enviornmentalists the Central Government and the State Government, in utter disregard of all norms, went ahead  with their plan.  Another article in the same newspaper dt.5th July by Smt.Vandanaa Shiva titled -Mountains into molehills - is equally damning.

     Now there is talk of the hoteliers being compensated for their loss. instead of them as also the administration allowing construction of these hotels in the flood pane of the rivers, being booked for causing death of thousands of affluent tourists and poor pilgrims.  In this crime against humanity both the Congress and BJB Governments of Uttarakhand are equally responsible.  This process was earlier very slow or not there and acclerated after creation of Uttarakhand.  The tourists were left totally at the mercy of hotel and transport mafia in utter disregard to all norms.  There was no check on the number of tourists being allowed to go to these pilgrimage sites through trecherous terrain and hostile weather throughout the year, far beyond the carrying capacity of the infrastructure , resulting in this human tragedy, which is entirely man made and is now being attributing to the Nature.

     During the British Rule  there were very strict rules for plying of heavy vehiles in Hills and  also the standards for construction of roads.  All these rules and regulations were ignored with impunity by the Admonistration.   Now trucks carrying loads beyond 10 tons and vehicles carrying 30-40 persons, leaving aside thusands of SUVs, Boleroes, Toyatas etc of rich tourists, are tearing the heart of the hills on roads build just besides the river bed without any provision for masonary walls to protect them from the fury of rivers during rainy season.  Compare the alignment of these roads with the Kathgodam -NainiTal road built by the  Britishers and one can easily understand why these roads have become death traps.

     There is another thought provoking article in Navabharat Times - titled "Lesser culprits have done their lot and now let be prepared for the bigger culprits"  In Sanskrit language there is a term"Gruddha Bhoj" i.e.a feast for vultures.   This will now soon happen in Uttarakhand in the name of providing succour tto the victims and all the aid will be cornered by the lackyies of politicins hand in glove with corrupt administration.  Thousands of Crores  Ruppees will be squandered and sub-standard work steeped in corruption will be undertaken without any supervisoion.

     It is now high time for the people to be vigilant and not allow the 'Gruddha bhoj' to happen. They should also not allow the mushroom growth of these so called hotels pandering to 'Tourists' wanting 5 star amenities every where regardless of its cost. Strict rules should be framed to regulate the flow of tourists and pilgrim and there should be no compromise with security, safety of the travellers and the enviornment.

     Let us hope that the Government will take a belated lessson from this calamity so that such things do not recur in future

तस्याSयतिषु  न श्रेयो बीजभोजि कुटुम्बवत्  ||

Tasyaayatishu na shreyo beejbhoji kutumbavat.

Kaamapi = Kaam +api.      Kaam = wish, desire.      Api = simply, even.     Shriyamaasaadya = Shrium +aasaadya.      Shriyam = prosperity.      Aasaadya = desired, obtained.    Yastadrusho =
Yah + tadrusho.       Yah =who.       Tadrusho = accordingly, such like.     Na = not.
Cheshtate = makes efforts.     Tasyaayatishu = tasya +ayatishu.    Tasya =  his .    Ayatishu = not making any efforts.   Na = not.     Shreyo = credit (for an achievement).  Beejbhoji = beej + bhoj.
Beej = seeds (for sowing a crop)    Bhoj = eating.    Beejbhoj = a farmer, who, instead of  sowing the seeds meant for a future crop eats them.      Kutumbvat = Kutumb+vat.   Kutumb = family, household.    Vat = like,   resembles to.

i.e.       A person, who simply desires to become prosperous and does not make sincere efforts  accordingly, his inaction results in not achieving his objective,  just like a farmer's family, who, instead of sowing the seeds kept for the next crop,  consume them as a food item.

(This subhashit condemns the tendency among the people in misusing and diverting their capital meant for furthering the business for their unimportant needs and cites the example of a farmer using the seeds meant for growing future crop for meeting his family's food needs. It also emphasises the need for making strenuous efforts for becoming rich.   This phenomenon is common in industrial and agricultural financing by banks, resulting in bankruptcy of the borrowers .)

Praaptumicchati = Praptm + icchati.      Prapta = to obtain .     Icchati = wishes.

i.e.       One should never give up one's zeal and endeavour for doing a job, simply by resigning to his fate. Without exerting one's self how can a person expect to extract oil from sesame seeds ?

(Through this subhashit the author has emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship and hard work and shed the tendency of resigning to one's fate.  There is a Hindi couplet on this very theme - " कायर मन कर एक अधारा , दैव दैव आलसी पुकारा "  (Kaayar man kar ek adhaaraa, daiva daiva aalasee pukaaraa) i.e. only cowards and unenterprising persons rely on their destiny, and without doing any efforts of their own, leave every thing to their destiny.)
