Daanena tulyam suhrudaasti  naanyo

of one's personality comparable to good moral character and no wealth is
comparable to contentedness in a person.

Today's Subhashita.

oversexed destroys the balance of mind, a job is lost while serving under an ill mannered
and wicked person,  anger destroys happiness, and arrogance and pride in a person steals
every thing from him.

of by you and  you might not have seen the curd  even in your dreams.
So, it is futile to talk to you about the milk, when  even the buttermilk
made out of the extract of Arjuna tree is difficult for you to get ?

persons in the society in an exaggerated manner by saying that even

(The above Subhashita in a satirical manner condemns the tendency among
persons with  authority of misusing their power  without caring for the
responsibility attached to such powers. which  has now become a bane in
the society.)

Today's Subhashita.

Today's Subhashita.

Arthaatpalaayate  gyaanam maarjaaraanmooshiko  yatha.

wealth.     Simhavaccha =  simghavat + cha.     Simhavat = like a lion.
Cha = and.   Jayedripum jayet + ripum.    Jayet = conquer.   Ripum =enemies.

i.e.          Knowledge departs from a place where there is  a concentration of
wealth in the same manner as a mouse flees by seeing a cat.  For acquiring
wealth one has to involve himself like a crane while catching fish and to
conquer the enemies one  needs courage like that of  a Lion.

(In Sanskrit Literature there is a pet theme of rivalry between  Lakshmi, the
goddess of Riches ,and Sarasvati, the goddes of Knowledge. Both can not
live together in harmony. If a person is rich he may not be learned and a
learned person may be poor.  The above Subhashita is also on the same theme
in a lighter vein. )

Haaram vakshasi kenaapi dattamagyena markatah.

lift it from his neck and sit over it.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that foolish persons can not
appreciate the beauty and importance of valuable things as also
the virtues of learned persons. )

because the alphabet 'la' dropped from the word 'Shloka' makes it 'shoka'
(meaning sorrow) due to unruly behaviour of the wicked persons, who
do  not appreciate the finer points of poetry.
