( water in a raw earthen pitcher will either leak or the pitcher will break,  fine grains can not remain in a sieve and will fall down, and women folk has the tendency of passing on the news or gossip to others rather than keeping it to themselves.)

Today's Subhashita.

Andho hi Raajaa bhavati yastu shaastravivarjitah.

i.e.       A king (or a Ruler in the present times) is like a blind person if  he is not well versed in
various scriptures and disciplines of learning.   A blind person can at least compensate the loss
of his eyesight through touching various objects by his hand, but an illiterate person is  like a blind
person in spite of having normal eye sight.

( Through this subhashita the author has highlighted the need of a ruler being well versed in
Scriptures and knowledgeable, because without it he can not take correct  decisions and his position is worse than an ordinary blind person.)

Today's Subhashita.

i.e.      If  a king's court (or an Assembly in present times) is without scholars, poets, singers and
other imminent persons, then it becomes like an assembly of blind, dumb and deaf persons.

( The status of any assembly of persons depends on the intellectual level of its participants.  If among the participants there are  no learned persons in various disciplines, poets and singers etc. then the level of interaction of such an assembly is very poor.  This fact has been highlighted in this Subhashita by using a hyperbole, branding  it as an assembly of blind, dumb and deaf persons.)

a lowly caste or tribe, whereas a poor person born in a learned Brahmin's family is despised and disgraced.

(This Subhashita has been classified under the caption 'Reproch of rich persons and wealth', dealing with the negative effects of wealth among people and the society at large, and should be viewed accordingly. Many Subhashits on this theme have been posted by me in the past.)

Today's Subhashita

i.e.       If a person always feels contented by what he has got then he is like a person having all
types of wealth.  Can a person who has shoes on his feet would instead like the entire Earth to be covered with leather  just to protect his feet ?

(This Subhashita has eulogised the virtue of contentment through a simile of  wearing  shoes rather than covering the earth with leather.  One who controls his desires and is content with his lot is a real wealthy person.)

Today's Subhashita.

ankur + udayah.    Paashanaat = on a stone.   Ankura = sprout.   Udayah = come up, rise.

i.e.        Persons suffering  from the fever of acquiring more and more wealth can not be cured
of this fever by the use of medicines, in the same manner as rain falling over a slab of stone even one hundred times can not result in sprouting of a plant over it.

( The lust for acquiring more and more wealth is highlighted in this Subhashita by the use of the simile of a fever which does not respond to medicines .)

5115 years of Kaliyuga have gone 426885 years are still there to come.)

i.e.      Shame upon this wealth, which is the root cause of all disasters in this World and creates delusion and infatuation among people. In Kaliyuga gambling and consumption of liquor and other intoxicants by the misuse of wealth is very rampant  and is very harmful and life threatening to womenfolk in particular.

persons of the society and experience the pleasure of donating his wealth for charitable purposes because wealth is fickle and impermanent just like the flickering  flame of a lamp against
a  harsh blowing wind.

( In Indian mythology, Lakshmi -the Goddess of Wealth, is considered as 'chanchalaa'  i.e fickle minded, as she does not favour a person permanently)

i.e.    O stupid and ignorant person blindly pursuing acquisition of wealth, why are you laughing at the misfortune that has befallen on you ?  Are you not surprised by knowing that wealth is never stable with a person ?  Look at the water wheel and see how the empty pitchers attached to it  are filled with water and again become empty as the wheel rotates.(alluded to acquisition of wealth and its loss).

(In this Subhashita by the use of a simile of a Water wheel used for lifting water from a river or a well, the author has highlighted the fact that wealth is never stable with a person and sooner or later
he loses it like the pitchers attached to the water wheel, which when full of water  become empty and the empty pitchers get filled by rotation.  In Indian mythology, Lakshmi the goddess of wealth, is considered for this very reason fickle minded, as she never favours a person permanently.)

i.e.     If by the God's grace a person acquires wealth, but desire to use the wealth for conspicuous consumption and other worldly pleasures is non existent in him, and he also does not have any longing for a better afterlife, then such a person is a fool  and just like a guard of a treasure.

(According to Hindu Religion there are only three ends of wealth i.e. conspicuous consumption, using it for charitable purposes, and destruction  Distributing wealth for charitable purposes is supposed to earn 'Punya' to the donor, which, puts him in a comfortable position in his next birth cycle, which is termed as 'Paraloka sameeha'.)

up by the people.

Today's Subhashita.

Na vidyayaa naiva kulena gauravam;

i.e.       People do not show such loyalty and affection towards learned and great persons of noble lineage as they always show towards rich persons. Oh ! even the sacred river Ganges, whom Lord
Shiva  even  held on his forehead, immediately and hastily proceeded to meet the Ocean.

(In this Subhashita the author has skillfully and jokingly used a simile based on the legend of
'Gangaavatarana' i.e. how the sacred river Ganges was brought from Heaven to the Earth by the
king Bhagirath for the salvation of his ancestors. Pleased by the prayer of Bhagirath God Shiva agreed to allow the river to land on his forehead and thereafter proceed towards the Ocean, on whose banks the ancestors of Bhagirath were lying as ash.  God Shiva is well known for his simple lifestyle and erudition unlike other Gods with lavish lifestyle.  The Ocean is the repository of various precious things and has been alluded to a rich person.)

( Through the use of a hyperbole the author of this Subhashita  has emphasised the fact that due to the obsession of acquiring more and more wealth in some persons, the faculties of hearing,speaking and seeing as also their personality is affected and they are not able to take correct decisions.)

Today's Subhashita.

i.e.     Generally rich persons are always beset with greed to acquire more and more wealth.
Oh !  see  how a person who is endowed with wealth worth Rupees Two crores (20 Millions)
stoops down like a bow just to acquire a small sum of Rupees on lakh (100 thousand).

( The idea behind this subhashita is that greed  compels  an already very rich person to stoop too low to acquire even small amount of wealth, This fact has been highlighted by the use of a simile of a bow and arrow for hitting a target.)

Aaseetpoorvam vimalajaladhau mandanam bhoopateenaam.

even an ordinary dog* is able to conquer it.

( In the book 'Subhashita Ratnakar' from which the above Subhashita has been taken, through a footnote the author has indicated that 'shun'  means 'mashak' i.e. a mosquito. But in 'Amarkosh',
- a Dictionary of Sanskrit words, the meaning of 'Shun' has been given as a dog.)

(For the  details of the concept of 'Punya' , please see the Subhashita dated 3rd December,2014)

Today's Subhashita.

Sushilo = good tempered.     Maatru = mother.    Punyena = on account of moral and religious merit.

due to the 'Punya' of his father.   He becomes generous due to,his family dynasty, and becomes lucky due to his own 'Punya' .

(It is well established that parents and particularly the mother, play a very important role in shaping the personality of a child. Generosity is a trait which runs through a dynasty and is inherited by the descendants.  This aspect has been beautifully brought out in the above Subhashita through the concept of 'Punya' of Hindu Religion.)

Today's Subhashita.

Yasya naasti svyam pragyaa kevalam tam bahushtutam.
Na s jaanaati shaastraartham darvee sooprasaaniva.

Artham =  interpretation, meaning.      Darvee = a spoon or a  ladle  .    Sooparasaaniva = soopa+ rasaan +iva.   Soopa = an open ended triangular basket made of cane used to thresh wheat or other foodgrains etc.     Rasaan = various liquids, cooked food etc.    Iva =  like that of.

i.e.      A person, who is not intelligent and wise but has only listened to the discourses of learned
persons by always remaining associated with them,can not know and interpret the scriptures and
treatises of various disciplines of learning.  His position is just like a ladle and a 'Soopa' , the former used for serving liquid food items and the latter for thrashing foodgrains etc.

(Although ladle and 'Soop' always remain in contact with various liquid and solid food items, they
remain unaffected by such association. Similarly an unintelligent person simply by associating himself with learned persons can not interpret various treatises of learning and remains ignorant. This fact
has been beautifully underlined in the above Subhashita by the use of the simile of a ladle and a 'Soopa')

i.e.      What harm can a wicked and mean person do to a person who is protected by the calmness of his mind like a sword in  his hand ?  Even if the wicked person misbehaves with him, due to his cool behaviour the  wicked person will be subdued just like a fire ignited over a non inflamable surface other than dry grass,  itself gets extinguished  shortly

(In this subhashita through the use of similes of a sword and fire the author has underlined the fact
that cool behaviour by a person to counter aggressive behaviour by the other person acts  like a fire
falling on a non inflammable surface, which does not flare up and gets extinguished on its own.)

Today's Subhashita.

(In this Subhashita a noble and learned person has been compared with a bow. The word 'sadvamshajatvam' has two meanings i.e. a person born in an illustrious family and a bow made of good quality bamboo stick having capacity to bend when it is bent by stretching the cord attached to its two ends. The capacity to adjust according to the prevailing situation is called 'Namratva' or modesty, as against rigidity, It is this  quality in both  men and a bow, which enables them to achieve their target.)

( This Subhashita underlines the interdependence of wild animals and forests in a forceful way.and indirectly emphasises the role of wild animals in the preservation of forests.)

Today's Subhashita.

(Imparting knowledge to others is considered the best form of charity in Hindu Religion and literature.  In doing so not only the receiver becomes enriched throughout his lifetime,the giver also gets enriched by doing so, as the level of his knowledge also increases and knowledge spreads and develops further.  This aspect has been beautifully outlined in the above Subhashita. )

Today's Subhashita.

Anant shaastram bahulaashcha vidyaa svalpashcha kaalo bahuvighnataa cha.

i.e.         There are infinite number of treatises on various disciplines of learning and too many branches of knowledge to learn, but the time at our disposal to read and learn all these is very limited and too many obstacles and impediments also come in doing so.   Therefore, it is advisable that one should read and learn only those books or disciplines of learning which are of essence or best for him, just like a swan, who separates and drinks only milk from a mixture of water and milk, leaving behind the water.

(In Hindu Mythology and Sanskrit Literature there is a legend of a swan having the capability of separating milk from a mixture of milk and water and leaving behind the water. This is termed as 'Neera-ksheera vivek' in literature i.e. accepting whatever is of substance and leaving behind  the things unwanted.  This legend has been used as a simile in this Subhashita.)

i.e.        Can a person, who wears shoes adorned with gold,  ever do philanthropic work for the welfare and prosperity  of  society ? .

( As the context of the above Shloka is not not available to me, I presume that it is a sarcastic remark on those filthy rich persons who indulge in vulgar display of their wealth and at the same time pose as philanthropic persons.  Any other translation of this Shloka is most welcome .)

i.e.      O king !  can  an order given by a person commanding full authority be discarded or refuted ? To oblige wicked and lowly persons is futile like giving a permanent shape to the sand.
